TONIGHT
Forced sterilizations in Peru
outside the crickets singing
executions of raped women
a dove calls to its mate
wedding guests blown up
suddenly the lovely party is gore and horror,
my phone rings,
outside the wrens still feed their young,
a fledgling mockingbird on the street's edge
flexing its too young wings
its parent screeches at passing cars
the world
will break your heart.
Be here now
says the sage,
the horns blowing smog the herds lowing
without cease
the measure of merriment
is paid in dirty coins, stolen,
but hey,
it's simple.
Peace waits until someone, unknowing,
says,
"Stop!"
and then listens while
nothing changes.
