Sometimes well meaning folks have contrasted the peaceful non-violent reputation of Buddhism against the sub-Christian behaviour of the Church -such as the Spanish Inquistion or Matthew Hopkin's Witch-hunts in C17 England.

Buddhism like Christianity, or anything else in life, has two sides.

There is (high) ideological Buddhism which is presented to the West sincere aspiring to a the spiritual developement of man, and there is Popular Rustic Buddhism, a manifestation of the sin that frustrates and perverts all spiritual aspiration.

This is an extract from a Prayer Alert concerned at the Persecutions of Christians in Sri Lanka.

"The 'Christian Fellowship Church' (CFC) had been closed for about three months following an initial attack last December, when a mob of about 300 Buddhist villagers rushed into the church. At that time, a near-riot ensued, with police finally convincing the mob to disperse. The following Sunday, the believers were attacked again by a much larger crowd. Following these attacks, representatives of the CFC were asked to sign an agreement for the "temporary suspension" of church services - but no date was given when services could be resumed."

At a popular level Buddhism can embrace Canaanite depths of superstitious idolatry and genocidal hatreds that would do Hitler proud.

I would choose Jesus against Buddha because Jesus deals with that problem- SIN. He was given up to death for our sins and raised to life for our justification. (Rom 4:25)

Cheers

ESRA
