Good question. In fact, I know of a JW who regularly reads books by christian scholars. I must write to the Watchtower and get an official response on their view on this (Naming no names of course. Nothing to become freaked out about or have a paranoid overload about.)

Anyhow, here are a few paragraphs from my friends at Reachout which includes an interesting quote from a Watchtower article on this:

"Personal Study

As the majority of these meetings need some form of congregation participation, personal study is vital. Surely, this would show up any false Biblical doctrines the Society was teaching. Here another part of Mind Control takes place. They do not have time to fully research what they are reading, so they take on trust what they are being taught. It is easy to see how the Society is able to manipulate their followers into wrong views. It is no surprise, then, to find the following instruction:

We may think of study as hard work, as involving heavy research. But in Jehovah's organization IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO SPEND A LOT OF TIME AND ENERGY IN RESEARCH, for there are brothers in the organization who are assigned to do that very thing, to help you who do not have so much time for this, these preparing the good material in The Watchtower and other publications of the Society (WT, 1 June 1967, p. 338).

What Jehovah's Witnesses think of as study is not deep research, but is simply reading the assigned Watchtower material, then the Watchtower questions at the bottom of the page, and underlining the Watchtower answers within the cited paragraphs."
