Subject: My Daughter And I

My daughter and I -

We’ve always been best friends.
We used to walk hand in hand;
Her little hand in mine.
We walked down the street; into the shopping malls
where people would stare
and wondered where this beautiful little girl had come from.

She was friendly, smiled at everyone she sees.
Said “Hi!” and shook everyone’s hand.
We sat and ate ice cream.
Then she would get so messy
that she gets chocolate all over her face.
I wiped that off her and she was happy.

Whenever we were in the park I put her on a swing.
I used to swing her back and forth, and pushed her up high.
She giggled as she laughed from her tummy.
“Higher Mom, higher!” She would say.
I swung her up higher, and as I looked up
I saw a halo on top of her dark curls.

“My little Angel!” I exclaimed loudly inside my head.
We would giggle and laugh together,
genuinely happy within ourselves.
Then we sat on the green meadow to have our lunch
Peanut butter sandwiches and Kool-aids,
Most tasty and quenching I must say.

Now she’s a grown young lady;
beautiful in her own rights.
Time has changed, but not for us.
We still walk hand in hand.
We still go to the malls.
We still go to the parks.

We shop for clothes
while she looks for hers and mine.
We walk in the park to see young mothers pushing
their little ones on the swings.
Their little ones giggle and say,
“Higher Mom, Higher!”

As we look up, we see little halos on top of their heads -
“Little Angels fly!
Little Angels soar high to the sky!
Little Angels reach for the sun!
Little Angels reach for the moon!
Little Angels reach for the stars!”

As we watch these little Angels fly
my daughter smiles and holds my hand
She gently kisses me on my cheek and whispers,
“I love you, Mom!”
We walk home again -
hand in hand -

My daughter and I.
