Subject: The New World - Part #74

PART #74

Peter Dunkirk was on his way to Jennings. That was going to be an important stop. He had made up his mind he would visit Oran Le Blanc by disguising himself. He had to make sure that man didn’t talk. That had been Peter’s greatest fear. If someone managed to put things together and get to Le Blanc, he might talk. Peter knew if Le Blanc talked, his life as he knew it, would be over. He must get into the jail and talk with him. He would promise him whatever he wanted to buy his silence. Peter already had plans for Le Blanc for he had hired Harrison Boussard to kill Le Blanc should he ever get out of jail. Peter did not like loose ends; and that is what Le Blanc represented.

Peter had planned this trip for a while before leaving Lake Charles, and he had picked up some rather bizarre clothes, a hair piece, thick glasses, and a fake beard and mustache. He would call on some of his acting skills. Anyone who was a courtroom lawyer had to call on some acting skills on occasion. Peter thought to himself, “I can act with the best of them.” He already had in mind his character’s part. He would present himself to the sheriff, as Le Blanc’s asthmatic uncle from New Orleans. He would tell the sheriff that he had heard of his nephew’s plight; and wanted to come and pray with him, and be an encouragement to him in his time of need. Peter had even practiced his part as he made the trip to Jennings.

Whenever he stopped to rest on the way to Jennings, he remained with the carriage. He avoided any contact with anyone along the way. He was not going to take any chances of being caught. When he had finished with Le Blanc he would continue on his journey to New Orleans where he would board a ship and sail towards Europe. He had enough money now to live as he wanted, and he would never again return to the Americas. He could start over in Europe, and no one would be any wiser.

Peter thought of how easy it had been to steal Joshua’s money. He had found the perfect pigeon. Joshua enjoyed his playtime so much he never bothered to check his accounts. Peter was always working to prove his loyalty to Joshua, and Joshua never suspected Peter was stealing him blind. Joshua felt Peter was his best friend. He wondered why Joshua felt he had to marry the English woman. When he thought of Catherine and Bow’s relationship, Peter felt some concern. He had always known that Bow was intelligent, and you couldn’t fool him like he had managed to fool Joshua. If Bow and Catherine got their thinking caps on, no telling what they would come up with in regards to him. What if they figured out everything? But, how was that possible? Peter had been careful to burn all the evidence. So, maybe they would break into his office trying to find him. All of Joshua’s records had been removed and burned. So, what if they decided to break into his home, what would they find? They’d find a house closed up, and the furniture covered. He had seen to it that nothing was left to incriminate him in anyway with the crimes that had been committed.

Harrison Boussard had lined up enough men to remove all the stolen goods and those goods had been moved.. Customers already had the goods in hand. He had told Harrison if he took care of the stolen goods, he could take all the money, and split it among the men. That would pay well, and would also be incentive to take care of Le Blanc so he didn’t talk.

When Peter drove into Jennings, he was wearing his costume and hair pieces. He had gotten a cane, and was leaning on it when he crawled out of the carriage. He had worked on the wheezing part until he had perfected it. He walked slowly, leaning on the cane, wheezing, and then mopping his brow with a large handkerchief.

He walked up to the jail, and entered the door. The sheriff looked up from his work at the desk, and saw this little old man who was obviously ill standing there at his desk. He managed to hoarsely speak these words, “I would like to see the man in your jail who is known as Oran Le Blanc.”

The sheriff was somewhat suspicious for no one had inquired about his prisoner since he had been arrested for killing Joshua Sallier. He had been held in jail waiting for the judge to make his rounds, than there would be a trial. The man had been quiet the entire time. He rarely spoke even when he or one of the deputies tried to engage him in conversation. Either he was one strange man, or he had been warned not to talk, or someone had paid him a tidy sum to remain quiet. He really did not know what to make of his prisoner.

The old man was wheezing up a storm; and when the sheriff asked him why he wanted to see the prisoner, he told him Le Blanc was his nephew. He had heard that he had been falsely accused of killing a lying, cheating gambler; and he wanted to come and pray with him, and encourage him. The old man began coughing so hard the sheriff was afraid he was going to end up having to call the doctor to take a look at him. He could hardly stand up, so the sheriff offered him a chair.

After the old man sat down, his cough seemed to subside somewhat. He was still gasping for breath, and once again croaked, “Will you please let me see my nephew?” The sheriff said, “I will tell him you are here, and see it he will see you. What is your name, old fellow?” “Just tell him it’s his Uncle Pete; he’ll know who I am,” said the old man.

To be continued...
