PART #75

The sheriff went back to the cell; and said, “Your Uncle Pete is up front, and wants to talk with you. Is it all right if I bring him back?” Le Blanc stood up; and said, “Sure, tell my Uncle Pete I want to talk to him too.” So the sheriff went out, and told the old man to go on back. He would get him a chair, and he could sit outside the cell. The old man had a terrible time just trying to get into a standing position. He started wheezing and coughing once again, and the sheriff helped to support the old man as he walked back to the jail cell. After he was settled on the chair; and his coughing had improved, the sheriff left the area and returned to his office.

Le Blanc laughed; and said, “Peter, you beat anything I have ever seen. You’re a pretty good actor.” Peter said, “Look, this is the first time I’ve had an opportunity to come. I have left Lake Charles, and will not be returning there. I wanted to make sure you were not talking about our deal.” Le Blanc said, “I told you I wouldn’t say anything if you paid me what you promised.” Peter said, “I will even give you an extra bonus if you give me your word you will say nothing about knowing me and about having this arrangement with me. I do not want to be connected in any way. If you handled getting rid of Joshua as I instructed, the law cannot convict you.” Le Blanc said, “I followed your instructions to the letter.” Peter said, “There will be an extra thousand dollars waiting for you in the bank here, as soon as you get out; so keep your mouth shut.”

While Peter was back talking to Le Blanc, the sheriff received a wire from Sheriff LeHavre in Lake Charles. He told him they were trying to find a man by the name of Peter Dunkirk who was a lawyer in Lake Charles, and had fled the area. It was possible he might be coming that way to see a prisoner named Oran Le Blanc. They believed he may have hired that prisoner to kill Joshua Sallier. If this man came into the jail, he was to be kept there for he had stolen vast sums of money from Sallier prior to his death.

When the sheriff read through the wire, he thought, “Surely this cannot be the man who was visiting Le Blanc. That man was old and sickly. He didn’t sound like he could possibly be that lawyer from Lake Charles.” But he knew he wasn’t going to take any chances with a man who called himself Uncle Pete. The sheriff knew the man was not going to leave without questioning.

The sheriff motioned for the deputy, and whispered to him the contents of the wire that has just come into the office. He said, “We are going to go back there to the cells where this man is talking to the prisoner, and bring him out here for questioning.” Both the sheriff and deputy walked back toward Le Blanc’s cell. When Peter saw them coming, he resumed his coughing and wheezing. He wiped his brow, and one would have thought he was drawing his last breath.

The sheriff said, “We would like to talk to you up front. Please come with us.” Peter looked up at the two officers from the chair where he was seated, and asked, “Why do you want to talk to me; surely it is not a crime to come, and pray for a relative who has been wrongly accused.” The sheriff said, “You sound like a lawyer I once knew.” Peter was startled by the statement made by the sheriff. The deputy extended his hand; and said, “Here, let me help you out to the front office.”

Peter slid off the chair with a great deal of difficulty. He was going to play his part to the hilt. He let the deputy help him to the office where he was directed to sit down. He was beginning to feel a little nervous, especially when the deputy moved to stand in front of the door. The wheezing was becoming a bit sporadic, as the sheriff stood and watched him. Finally after a period of time the sheriff asked, “Are you feeling better now?” Peter said, “Yes, I do believe I am feeling better.” “Do you think you can talk for a while?” asked the sheriff. “Perhaps I can if it is not for a long period of time,” remarked Peter.

The sheriff smiled at him; and said, “It can be as short a period of time or as long a period of time you choose.” Peter replied, “That’s very kind of you.” The sheriff said, “When you came in here, you told us your name was Uncle Pete. Could you tell us your full name?” Peter said, “My full name is Peter Fontenot.” The sheriff motioned to the deputy, and the deputy walked back to the cell where Oran Le Blanc was being held. The deputy stopped in front of the cell and asked, “Mr. Le Blanc, I want to know the full name of your Uncle Pete. We need to place it in the records.” Le Blanc looked at the deputy; and said, “Why didn’t you ask Uncle Pete?” “Ah, it slipped our minds, and we didn’t think of it until he was gone. He’s your uncle; I wouldn’t think it would be too difficult to come up with his last name. We have to have it Le Blanc.” Oran Le Blanc answered, “His name is Peter Guidry.” “Thank you Le Blanc,” said the deputy as he walked back to the office.

The deputy closed the door to the cell area, and walked into the office. He said to the sheriff, “Le Blanc says his uncle’s full name is Peter Guidry.” The sheriff said, “Well, isn’t that interesting?” He looked at Peter; and said, “Would you please tell me your real name?” Peter was sweating profusely by this point. Instead of wheezing, he was gasping for air. He began to stutter, “I sssaaaiiid mmmyy name iiiss Peeettteer Fonnnnntennnnott.” Peter reached up to wipe his brow; and his hair piece slid sideways. He tried to adjust his hairpiece, but the sheriff reached for it and it fell off in his hands. He looked at Peter, and then pulled slightly on the beard and the mustache. They, too, fell off in his hands. Slowly the sheriff lifted the thick glasses from Peter’s face. He said, “Isn’t it amazing how different Uncle Pete looks now?”
