Subject: The New World - Part #76

PART #76
The sheriff put the fake hair pieces down on his desk, and walked back to Peter’s chair. He said, “Is your name Peter Dunkirk?” When the sheriff mentioned his name, Peter knew the game was over. They knew who he was; someone in Lake Charles had put the whole thing together. Peter lowered his head, and he softly said, “I am Peter Dunkirk.”

Peter was placed in a cell beside Le Blanc, and within a few minutes Le Blanc was telling the sheriff about his connection with Peter Dunkirk. Peter sat on a cot in his cell with his head in his hands. Where had everything gone so wrong? He thought he had everything worked out perfectly. He had removed the evidence of theft from his office, and burned it. He had been so careful to cover his tracks. Who had figured this out, and knew where to find him? He could not believe his ill fate.

After Peter was placed in a cell, the sheriff went back out to the office; and sent a wire to the sheriff in Lake Charles. The wire simply said, “We have Peter Dunkirk in the jail at Jennings.” When the wire came in to the sheriff’s office at Lake Charles, Bow happened to be there talking to Sheriff Le Havre. They had been discussing what they could do to locate Peter. Sheriff Le Havre turned to Bow and said, “Bow, this is our lucky day.” “What do you mean?” asked Bow. “This is a wire from the sheriff at Jennings. They have Peter Dunkirk in a jail cell at this time.” Bow said, “Did they find the money on him? The man should have a huge amount of bank drafts on his person.” Sheriff Le Havre said, “They should have checked him for that, but I will send a wire back to tell them to be sure to look for the drafts.”

Bow said, “Sheriff, I have to go home, and tell Catherine about this. She is going to be elated to hear the news. This certainly is our lucky day.” Bow went outside, climbed on his horse, and rode out of town toward the plantation. He could hardly wait to tell Catherine the good news. They would be able to pay the back salaries to the men who had worked for Joshua at the saw mill. That would help to settle old debts, and protect them from further problems. The money would also help to get them on their feet financially. He wanted to give bonuses to the people who had faithfully worked at the plantation. They had been wonderful when they realized the money was gone. Bow and Catherine had promised them when the saw mill was up and running again they would be paid; now that promise could be met and a bonus given besides.

Catherine stayed on the porch while Jean Baptiste was taking his nap. She had gone through the ledger page by page. She couldn’t believe how foolish Joshua had been about his money. It was hard for her to believe a lawyer could be so crooked that he would steal from his clients. She hoped that man was caught, and put away for a long time. She heard horses approaching, and lifted her hand to her forehead to shield her eyes against the penetrating sunshine. There were four riders approaching. One of the men appeared to be older then the rest of the men. She wondered if these men were Marguerite’s father and brothers.

They rode up to the porch; and said, “Good morning, Ma’am. We were wondering if Mr. Le Faye is here. The older man said, “That little fellow looks like my grandson.” Catherine smiled; and said, “Then you must be Reuben.” Bow told me you were coming out to look at the equipment. He had to go into town; and he said to ask you to give me your information. He also told me he would let you know when the equipment is updated so you can begin work.”

Reuben said, “These are my sons, and they are all willing to go to work for Bow. We are ready to start whenever you are ready for the saw mill to open. I thought we would ride out to the saw mill, and look things over. Is that all right with you?” Catherine said, “Yes, of course it is all right for you to go out to the saw mill. When you look over the equipment, you may see things that were previously overlooked. You might want to stop back with your findings and I will share those with Bow when he returns.”

The men left; and Catherine picked up Jean Baptiste, and carried him into the house. She took the baby up to Marguerite’s room to change him. She heard her name being called, and realized that Bow had returned. She was surprised he was back already. She called out to him, and she could hear his boots clicking on the floor as he approached the stairs. Soon he walked into the room, and over to the bed where she had laid Jean Baptiste. When she looked up at him, he was wearing a big smile, and his eyes were dancing with excitement. He scooped her up in his arms and said, “I have the most wonderful news. Peter Dunkirk is in a cell at the jail in Jennings.”

She said, “Bow, how did all this happen? I can’t believe he has been caught. I was so afraid he would get away with everything. This is good news.” Bow said, “I don’t know the particulars yet, but he has been caught. Now, we can get back the money that belongs to the plantation. We will be able to pay the people that Joshua owed, and things can get back to normal for us.” Catherine laughed, “Bow, will we know what “normal” is when we get there?” Bow replied, “If we don’t recognize it at first, we will be fast learners.”
