PART #9

Bow and Catherine were awakened at 1:00 A.M. and given the information that Boudreau had been hurt, and was being taken into surgery. They quickly dressed, and went to the hospital at Lake Charles. When they arrived, they found a very distressed Lucia in the waiting room. She was crying, and seemed almost incoherent. Catherine had never met Lucia before, and wasn’t sure who she was. Both she and Bow sat down, and were waiting to speak to a doctor or nurse about Boudreau. While they waited, Catherine began feeling sorry for the young lady who seemed to be so distressed. She asked, “My dear is there something we can do for you?”

Lucia sobbed, “He just went to get my purse out of the car, and someone stabbed him.” Catherine looked at Bow; and she asked, “Were you with Boudreau tonight?” Lucia stopped sobbing for a moment; and asked, “Do you know Boudreau?” Catherine said, “Indeed we do, he is our son. Could you tell us what happened?”

Lucia talked about her date with Boudreau. She said they had gone to the Country Club, and danced a few dances when she remembered she had left her purse in the car. Boudreau told her he would go outside, and get the purse for her. She said, “He told me I was to wait inside; he would be back in a few moments.” Tears were running down Lucia’s face as she said, “I waited, for what seemed a long time, and became worried for he didn’t come back. I thought I would run out, and see where he was. I found him on the ground between his car and another car. I called for help, and luckily there was a doctor inside at the dance. He came out to the parking lot, and arranged for Boudreau to be taken to the hospital.”

Bow said, “What is your name?” Lucia said, “I am Lucia Deverall.” Bow asked, “Is your father, Hollingsworth Deverall?” “Why, yes that is my father,” she responded. Catherine asked, “Do your parents know you are here at the hospital?” Lucia said, “No, I have not notified them.” Bow asked, “Do you want me to notify them?” Lucia said, “No Sir, I do not, for Daddy will insist I come home. I want to stay here until I am sure Boudreau is going to be all right. I feel responsible this terrible thing happened to him. If I hadn’t forgotten my purse he would be all right now, instead of in surgery.”

Bow watched Lucia; and thought, “She looks like a woman Boudreau would date.” Bow knew her father, and had absolutely no use for the man. For a number of years Bow had felt this man was involved in illegal activities. Hollingsworth Deverall had moved into Lake Charles ten years before. Bow had known the man had come from Pittsburgh, and seemed to have unlimited amounts of money. He purchased one of the major banks in Lake Charles, and later on became involved in buying and selling real estate. He was known in the business circles as a very tough businessman. Bow had seen some of the people who worked for Hollingsworth; and he had a strong suspicion that Hollingsworth was moving illegal liquor and possibly even some drugs. Lake Charles was a good outlet because of shipping facilities. Hollingsworth had some small ships that were staffed, and were constantly coming in and out of the harbor.

Bow often wondered if Hollingsworth Deverall was really the name of Lucia’s father. He wondered if Boudreau had any idea what he was getting into by dating this man’s daughter. He looked up to see a doctor walking toward them. He removed his surgical mask and said, “I believe Boudreau is going to be all right.” He had a nasty wound, but we have managed to stitch him up, and get the bleeding stopped.

Lucia jumped up, and thanked the doctor for helping him. She turned to Bow and Catherine; and said, “I will call for Daddy to send a car to pick me up.” Bow said, “We will be happy to take you home if you like.” Lucia said, “Oh no, you stay here with your son. Daddy will take care of getting me home.” She asked the doctor where she might make a telephone call, and he directed her to the lobby of the hospital.

Bow and Catherine asked the doctor how long he felt Boudreau would be in the hospital. The doctor said, “It may only be a few days, but we will have to see how well he heals, before we will know for sure.” Bow said, “Do you know if the person who stabbed Boudreau was caught?” The doctor said, “I really don’t know about that, but it might be a good idea for you to contact the police, and try to get some information from them.

To be continued...
