Steve, A register is a devise whereby heat or cooled air is admitted to a room. Because heat rises, this grate like device is placed in the ceiling of the first floor that opens to the second floor..When we had a two story house, the register in one room in the second floor actually allowed us to see down into the ground floor room. There I go with the Americanized terms..Sorry!!
