PART #19

The next morning when Boudreau’s doctor came into the room, Boudreau asked him about the doctor he had called in on consultation regarding his wound. His doctor looking surprised said, “What doctor? I never called any doctor in for consultation.” Now it was Boudreau’s turn to look surprised. He said, “There was a doctor who came in last night to look at my wound. He told me he had been called in on consultation to see how my wound was healing.” “What did this man look like?” asked the doctor. Boudreau described him, and commented, “Both Lucia and I thought he was a very strange acting man. He seemed somewhat familiar to both of us, but we could not seem to remember where we had seen him before.”

The doctor looked closely at Boudreau and said, “I don’t know who this man was, but he was not anyone I had sent in here. I wouldn’t call someone in on consultation for your wound. In fact, I am going to release you today to go home. There would have been no reason to consult another doctor. You’re doing fine. Do you think someone was playing a practical joke on you?” Boudreau answered, “No, this man was not playing any practical jokes. I was about to tell him to stop being so rough when my girl friend walked into the room. I do remember he had a startled look on his face when he saw her, and heard her speak.”

The doctor seemed to be deep in thought, and he said, “Boudreau, since you were stabbed by someone, I really think this is something you need to tell the police. Perhaps this person had more on his agenda then checking out your wound.” Boudreau seemed shocked at the doctor’s suggestion to talk to the police about the matter. “Surely, this was not something sinister,” he said. The doctor said, “Don’t be too sure, young man.”

After the doctor left, Boudreau placed a call to Bow at the shipyards and told him he was being released. He asked him if he would come, and pick him up. Bow told him he would be right over as soon as he got someone to cover for him. Boudreau said, “Dad, something really strange happened last night.” Bow asked, “What happened son?” Boudreau told him about the strange man who came to his hospital room saying he had been called in on consultation. Boudreau said, “I asked my doctor this morning about this man, and he said he had not called any doctor in on consultation. He recommended I tell the police about the man and the visit. He thought it was possible the man was somehow connected to the stabbing.”

Bow thought a lot about what Boudreau had told him about the man who paid a visit to his room. As he was driving to the hospital, he decided he would stop at the police station. He walked inside; and asked to speak to the officer in charge of Boudreau’s case. He told him what Boudreau had said about the visitor; and how the man had been startled when Lucia had come into the room, and started talking. “Boudreau told me he felt the so-called doctor beat a hasty retreat out of the room at that point,” said Bow.

The police officer listened carefully to what Bow had to say. He said, “You know I believe I had better go over to the hospital; and have a talk with your son. I should get a description of this man who came into your son’s room last night. This may actually have been the man who stabbed your son. Bow said, “Boudreau did tell me there was something familiar about the man, but he couldn’t be sure what it was.”

Bow and the police officer walked into Boudreau’s room; and found that he was dressed, and ready to go home. He seemed somewhat surprised by the appearance of the police officer. Bow told him he had stopped at the police station on the way to the hospital. The police officer said, “Boudreau, your father told me about your visiting doctor last evening. He mentioned that the man seemed somewhat familiar to you, but you couldn’t place what it was that stood out to you. Let me ask you a question, “Could this have been the man who stabbed you?” Boudreau said, “Of course it was dark that night, and it happened so fast. What he said that night was the thing I remember the most. He said, ‘Sonny that should take care of you.’ I can still hear that voice.”

The police officer said, “Did the man who came to see you have a similar voice?” Boudreau thought for a few moments, and said, “It was somewhat similar. Perhaps that is what made me think there was something familiar about him.” “Was this man an older man?” asked the officer. “It was difficult to tell; I looked at his face, and I thought to myself, “I wonder if this man wears makeup. I discounted that for you don’t see that on a doctor in a hospital. The man also looked like he had colored his hair for some of his hair was different. All his hair was not the same color. I could see around his hair line, it was a different color.”

Bow listened to all that Boudreau had said; and asked, “Would it be possible this man was trying to disguise his appearance so that Boudreau would not recognize him?” The police officer said, “I think that is entirely possible. Did you say he had a doctor’s coat on when he came in to see you last night?” Boudreau answered, “Yes, he did have a doctor’s coat on when he came into the room.” The police officer said, “He would have needed to pick one up to wear. We need to make sure there are no doctor’s coats lying around anywhere.” The police officer took off to the nurses’ station; and asked if anyone had found a doctor’s coat in a different place. One cleaning lady happened to overhear the question; and she said, “I found a doctor’s coat in the linen closet this morning when I was getting some sheets to change the beds. Someone had folded it neatly, and laid it with the linens.”

The police officer went back to Boudreau’s room. He said, “Boudreau, you are going to have to be really careful for we did find the coat the so-called doctor wore last night. This indicates to me the man is the stabber, and he is probably concerned you will be able to identify him. Boudreau said, “Something else I should tell you is that Lucia said the man seemed familiar to her as well.” Bow asked, “Did she say why the man seemed familiar?” Boudreau said, “She was impressed much the same way as I was; in that she said she knew she had run across this man somewhere, but could not remember where.”

Bow told Boudreau he had a few things he needed to do, but would be back momentarily. He motioned for the police officer to come outside Boudreau’s room so he could talk with him. The police officer asked, “Bow, did you think of something else I should know?” Bow said, “I am concerned this man works for Lucia’s father, Hollingsworth Deverall. If that is true, then Hollingsworth may be the one who is behind Boudreau’s stabbing.”

To be continued...
