Subject: SB2381 in New Jersey introduced

Senator Sharp James (who also holds the position of mayor of Newark)et al
just proposed the following:
S2381 of 2002-2003
Summary
The "Responsible Pit Bull Ownership Licensing Act"; authorizes
municipalities to require a license for a person to own, keep or harbor a
pit bull.

We are asking all Newark area residents to immediately call, write and email your mayor and assemblypeople (yes, even if you have already done so) and tell them what you think of this. Be polite, stick to one or two points. Another Letter to the Editor of your biggest area papers would be in order as well.

Updating site as fast as I can over weekend with direct email links to Senators. The club sent a professionally printed 16 page color catalog out to the Assembly Thursday, and this Monday or Tuesday they'll be distributed to the Senate as well. Last week a letter to 135 ADBA exhibitors in the state of NJ went out advising them to join in "Letters to the Editors" week. A letter from the Boxer Club of New Jersey went out to the Assembly last week. The NJ Federation of Dog Clubs, Garden State Kennel Club and NJ Boxer Club people are all passing out info at AKC shows this weekend.

This is "Flyer Week". Please email us if you are in New Jersey and would like copies of a few different flyers emailed back to you. We are asking all NJ dog people to make 50 copies of a flyer and then post them at neighborhood vets, stores, laundromats, anywhere they see a bulletin board. (Don't forget to take tacks and tape folks!) The club name and phone number is on the flyers, it was in the ad we ran in the Courier-Post Friday also, the phone and email have not stopped coming, some great calls!
I am working fulltime for the club now, and so will be available for calls during office hours.

Be aware American Pit Bull Terriers are not the only breed affected by these proposals. Assemblyman Burzichelli's office confirmed Wednesday that the only changes made definitely to this bill was to add "Rottweiler" along with every occurence of "pitbull" in the bill. Burzichelli did tell a radio station interviewer that he would be adding German Shepherds and Dobermans with the "pitbulls" and Rottweilers. And that a menu of other breeds will be offered for municipalities to choose from.

We will be featuring merchandise in our club store (link on site) that will help offset expenses associated with fighting against this bill. We will have the new designs available later this week. This way, those who cannot take time to help will be able to donate something as well, if they wish. Plus the stuff is really nice, you all will like the designs too!

We are planning on buying airtime on local radio stations, that is being researched this week.

Ideas, comments and suggestions always welcome.
