Slaves were allowed certain freedoms, the same as we are now allowed certain freedoms (such as bike riding).

Slavery comes in degrees, and the truth is that we are all enslaved by a system which forces us to live within it's bounds. Certainly we are allowed to choose what to do (within limited confines), but the game we must play has set rules from which we are not allowed to deviate. This is, to a certain degree, slavery.

If, in order to pay for a U.S. military presence in the South Pacific, I must work more hours in order to pay both my living expenses and my taxes then for that period of time I am enslaved. I have not chosen, but rather I am forced, to cover that expense.

I am being a bit silly, of course, but the idea remains important that we view government actions (such as taxation, in this example) with a sceptical and creative eye. If not, we will be slaves.
