In reply to: Itchy_Scratchy_911 's message, "Re: Interesting parallels" on 08:46:48 05/20/04 Thu

good points -- but not the ones I was thinking of when I posted.

I was thinking of such things as:
*the way in which governments (formal or informal!) get people to behave
*the power of religion and the promise of heaven as a reward for sacrifice of self
*the lack of understanding of other cultures

re your points -
*death of innocents (or at least non-combatants) were the blood-chilling precipitating events -- Pearl Harbor and 9/11
*oil vendors from the middle east have more or less been part of the global economy for at least 35 years.
*war is hell -- declared or undeclared
*Author Sasaki herself did not necessarily see parallelism, either

I think where I was troubled was with other research done in locating & using the Sasaki paper -- we uncovered one author who wrote that some thinking in the US was that we would need to anniliate the Japanese military and probably the rest of the population in order to stop the war -- ergo we dropped the bombs.

Trite but trure -- those who do not understand how history is compiled are doomed to watch it repeated.

Itchy -- your comments added to the dialogue -- thanks!
