Well - it's an old joke. In 1990 the rap group Digital Underground released the 'Sex Packets' album (you might remember the hit 'Humpty Dance' from that album). The second track on the album was 'The Way We Swing,' one verse of which went:

'Don't you know that we're the microphone masters;
Known to MCs as the Raw Dog Bastards;
We bust rhymes and write everyday;
So listen close to the things that we say.'

Being in Junior High school (actually, the summer between 8th grade, and my Freshman year) this was about the pinnacle of my musical tastes. When my friends and I sang along we'd add our own names to rap mix to make it more personalized. I became: The Rob Dog Bastard.

But the reason I've stuck with it is the more important thing. I believe firmly that almost all things in the world should be taken with a grain of salt. The important things are those which make you smile, laugh, remember an old friend or any other such positive emotion. I also stand firmly against the politically correct, finding that honesty and bluntness is communication is sometimes harsh at first, but always more rewarding in the end. Too many people would have let go of such a childish moniker despite their fondness for it. Me - I'll stick with it.
