1) I defy you to show me another practical technology that gives us the same benefit that guns do. There really aren't many options.

2) The impression you get from the paper is misleading. I don't know if you weren't paying attention to earlier discussions, but the number of firearm deaths of all kinds (homicides, suicides, self defense, accidents, police action, etc) in this nation is not even close to the number of gun defenses (35,000 and 2.5 million respectively). Furthermore, guns cause fewer accidental deaths per year than any other major cause with the exception of gaseous poison. The fact is, if you own guns responsibly, your child is more likely to drown in the bathtub than die from your guns. Call me crazy, but it seems to me that benefit far outweighs the negative.
