I see your problem and I have the solution.

Your kids are old enough to be introduced to your gun(s).

My house and vehicles are full of guns, and we've never had an incident, in fact, my kids could care less where they are.

Why?

Because I took away the drama and the mystique of guns.

About the time my kids were your kids current ages - I showed them all the guns and how they worked and what they were for and what the rules concerning them were about, where they were from, their histories.

I told them that whenever they wanted to see them they only had to ask an adult for supervision.

And then they got bored with them. Swords and knives and bayonets as well. For a while they asked questions about what war this gun was used in, what country it came from or how old the gun was and then it wasn't some secret mystery locked away from prying eyes and hands.

My daughter started shooting when she was nine. She uses my Ruger semi-auto .22 (50th anniversary edition) when we target shoot. At 25 yards she scores 10 in the 10 spot with iron sights. *eyes get misty*

After 3 targets she wants to go play with her buddies. My son and I are doing cub scout bb gun shooting for his merit badge (that's right Kharn, in the USofA we give kids medals for shooting guns!).

He's more interested in Archery though. I cannot hit the side of a barn with a bow and this varmint of mine scores 3 bullseyes out of 7 shots.

------------

Besides making your children good stewards as well, you benefit from quality family time.

I think this is the far safer route to go than just drilling your kids with "if you see a gun" mantras. Although we go through that drill too.

It's how I grew up with guns and I've never had an accident with a gun in over 40 years. Nor have any of my four brothers.

--------

Just keep the gun and the ammo locked up apart...... cuz they're still kids.

YeeHaw! My kids got guns!
