Subject: DammitBoy are you Swarkofsky?

I ask because below you reference the Para P14. I got a little too involved w/ the gun debate at BET. I visit them from time to time and mainly have fun schooling the Afrocentrists.

I've read some of the gun threads here and have a couple of things to add. I'm a big fan of the 1911 and it is my #1 carry choice. Someone said of the 1911's capacity: "Unless there are eight guys dumbass." I used to think just like that and have over 20 high cap mags (for other weapons) to prove it. Now I am of the opinion that nothing beats superior ergonomics and a good trigger. I'll bet my life on a 7+1 1911. With practice you will be amazed at how fast you can perform a tactical or speed reload. Ultimately, it boils down to what you believe works best for you. There is no perfect firearm and any selection involves something compromised.

Where I live it is legal to keep a gun in one's car (no permit required). In the car I keep an XD-9 with a couple of modified Beretta high-caps loaded with Federal Expanding FMJs (+P). That's correct I did say expanding FMJ. I like these rounds because they combine the reliability of ball ammo with the ballistic effectiveness of hollow points. And unlike hollow points, these will never clog on thick clothing, drywall, etc. preventing expansion. I use .45 expanding FMJs in my 1911 as well.

I like the XD as a car gun b/c it is ultra reliable, damn near single action, accurate, and it is my least expensive pistol (so if my car is broken into it's not as bad as it could be). Oh, and high capacity is also a plus. The main reason I chose the 9mm is because I own a bunch of Beretta mags already.

Of course I'm a big bore fan, but feel secure with 9mm. The ammo I use is very effective. I am very accurate with a 9mm. And the light recoil allows for very fast and accurate follow up shots. 9mm is the cheapest ammo for me to practice with. And we all know the importance of practice.

Someone asked if it is a good idea to have "army" rifles around the house? That depends. I own a battle rifle (as opposed to an assault rifle aka poodle shooter or mouse gun) because I want to, not for defensive purposes. For defending the home a battle rifle is a poor chose indeed (unless you live on a ranch somewhere). It is an offensive weapon and has extremely limited purposes (this is less the case w/ 5.56 NATO assualt rifles). My rifle is never kept loaded and I secure the receiver with a cable lock. So yes, I feel that it is safe around children. Furthermore, I separate the lock key from the ammo and the ammo from mags (soon I hope to have a safe). Another reason I never load it is because of the remote possibility of a slam fire.

Children will never see my rifle at home (even if they dig). I really don't want a lot of people knowing that there is a >$2k mag fed rifle in the house. It makes for an inviting theft target.

Children should be familiar with firearms. Firearms are a fact of life and there is a chance that they will come across one at a friend's house one day. I would want my child to be competent in such a situation and not view it as something taboo. If/when I have a child, I'll think more about this. A good safety starting point is Jeff Cooper's safety rules (and I would repeat them to a child early and often):

RULE I: ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED
RULE II: NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO DESTROY
RULE III: KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET
RULE IV: BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET

One last thing, I have never heard of a child active in NRA youth shooting ever accidentally shoot themself or anyone else. Finally, please excuse this long post. I am usually concise, but not with guns.
