that went in a straight enlisted men, did their twenty years, and came out under 40, with a decent retirement package (monthly income and medical). These are basically non-professional types (meaning only a high school diploma), yet because of their circumstances they are able to hold down a mediocre 40 hour a week job and live comfortably. It's not a bad gig if you do it right.

Going in and getting a degree out of it, doing the "regular army" bit, etc. is even sweeter. Better benefits, marketable job skills, it's a good deal. Even if you don't do thirty years you can't lose. I know a guy I go to church with who is currently in the navy. He's a full commander, but he has a desk job out at Fort Gordon (it's in my town). He's being transfered to Norfolk, Va. Another desk job. I asked him if he would get a combat assignemnet and he said it wouldn't happen. He has over twenty years, but he's ready to get out now. The navy really wanted him to stay in and they've sweetened the deal for him to move (he wanted to stay here in Ga.). He's planning on moving, but returning as soon as he can (a couple of years). He went in as an enlisted man, went to college on the GI bill and went back in as an officer. He's only a couple of years older than me.

I think the draft could be a positive measure for all Americans. I think it's bullshit that only guys have to register for selective service. All Americans should have to do some sort of civil service. Many European nations do just this and I think it's a really good idea.
