Subject: The shoe thing.

From Lara @ UV:

Well, shoes are dirty, as are bare feet if exposed to the ground, which is
why its also an insult to show the soles of your feet to an Arab. It is
expected that you would always remove your shoes when entering an Arab
household.

Its also common in the Far East. The head is seen as closest to god, and the
feet as furthest away, so least in touch with spirituality. When i was in
Thailand we went to a temple in Bangkok, and sat to look at the Emerald
Buddha, as everyone else was. I was sitting with my legs straight in front
of me, and was politely asked by a curator to sit cross legged or 'mermaid
style' so that the soles of my feet werent facing the Buddha. I also once
put my sandals on the bed, and was cautioned for that, as again, its
considered dirty.
