Misplaced weapons??? Things must have changed. I was never in the Army, but I remember Fort Polk being practically shut down to look for some shyte bird's lost rifle. The Corps still takes that sort of thing very seriously.

There is a lot of debate over the M16 family of rifles. Critics say it is an unreliable and puny weapon. Proponents say that if you maintain it, it will serve you well. I say that young soldiers and Marines have been brainwashed. The weapon is maintenance intensive. Having to clean it three to four times a day is a joke. Under fire you may get sandy or muddy and there isn't time to whip out the cleaning kit. My dad (a Marine 'Nam infantryman) pointed out that the gooks could hide their weapons in muddy rice paddies for days, pick them up and fire them as they were still draining soot.

The military (less so the Marine Corps) has deemphasized marksmanship. Instead, they are drifting towards volume of fire on a kill zone. If this is so (and it may not be), why can't we issue a 4 MOA rifle made to more forgiving tolerances?

You may want to check out the website "Soldiers for the Truth." http://www.sftt.org

Also Colonel Hackworth's site: http://www.hackworth.com/article04032002c.html

They sometimes cover some of the issues you complain about.
