In reply to: KSMoTO 's message, "what??" on 09:33:13 04/10/03 Thu

then it's no big deal, but the story certainly portrays the incident very differently than you describe?

I've noticed that about you KSM. You seem to understate and counter the reports we hear in the West concerning Islam and the Middle East. Now that leads to several possibilities...

1st Possibility) You are correct in your assessment of life in the Middle East.

After all you live there so obviously you have to see it first hand. This lends credence to what you say.

1-A) Which leads to the question of why are we in the West being subjected to what has to be misinformation concerning life in the Middle East?

Well we could assume it is the Jewish controlled media wanting to promote a single-minded opinion of the Middle East in general and Islam in particular. This would further their goals of maintaining US support for them both financially and militarily.

2nd Possibility) You're full of shit.

The situation in the Middle East is in fact as we see it on TV and in the media and you want to convince us otherwise for some reason known only to yourself. Perhaps you feel ashamed that Islam and the Middle East exist like they do and you want to promote a more open minded view of your region of the world?

2-A) Visions of the Iraqi minister of information come to mind.

3rd Possibility) The reality is somewhere in between these two opposites.

This possibility seems to me to be the most likely. The propaganda we are subjected to in the West regarding Islam is "spun" so that the negative is emphasized and the positive is rarely heard or is kept very low key. Yet at the same time interests in the Middle East also want to promote themselves as a modern and forward looking region that is viable economically and worthy of consideration for foreign investment. This means we have to weigh both sides of this issue and try to divine a happy medium where neither extreme is given our complete acceptance.

So a few questions...

The web site that I posted the link to the story about the singer appeared to be a pro-Islam Middle Eastern news outlet. Is this the case? If it is then they in fact are promoting the view espoused in the story, a view that to me appears to have frightening implications (morality/thought police with the approval/backing of the state). Is this web site a source with an extremist slant on issues? You are a Muslim and promote what appears to be a conservative-religious value system, but you also respect differing beliefs and cultures (non-extremist). This runs counter to the story I linked to. Is this a news outlet of an extreme nature? Are you what could be considered a "liberal" Muslim? How does this all reflect upon the Middle East, Islam, and the "Western" world that wishes to peacefully coexist and go forward in a more equitable economic relationship that hopefully has a bit more respect for everyone involved?

*This is a serious query meant to give everyone involved a say on issues that are of great importance to the world today. The "full of shit" reference wasn't intended as disrespect for the parties involved, rather it is a convention of this particualr environment*
