Well, cross country our runs were usually 5k though we did a 4 mile road run, and a 10k (Prefontaine Memorial, about 1000 runners each year).

In track I ran the 440, the 1500 and the 3000, all in the same meet. We were short on distance runners also (I was the only one who ran the 1500 and 3000, but even running them tired was usually worth points as I usually finished in the top 3 overall). However, the 880 is one of those distances that I really hate, so I never ran it. We usually did a runner's medley too, which was a relay. The first runner ran one lap. The second runner two, the third three and the fourth four laps. I usually ran either the first or third as I was accustomed to that length (3 laps being just a bit longer than the 1500 for you non track runners).

Yes, but I was fast and determined. I ran varsity enough to letter my senior year, and ran JV the rest for points. My usual time for the 5k was right about 19 minutes, and I even made it to state my senior year as an alternate runner. I did run the Prefontaine one year in about 36 minutes, and finished 50th overall (1100 runners that year). While in the Army I ran my two mile PT test in the 10 - 11 minute range (fastest was 10 flat).

The perfect build. That's what most of the marathon runners look like. Tall for a long stride, scrawny to avoid the added baggage, and only enough muscles to run. That sounds like our top 5 runners (I was the 6th).

>All the stubby muscular guys ran the 440 or less.

Yeah, but I'm a distance runner by personal preferance. I enjoy a race where I can start out at a comfortable pace and pass about 20 people before the end.
