Subject: Iraq is collapsing...

Reports of Iraqi regulars trying to surrender have been starting with the increased presence of American and coalition forces becoming more active in the region. Already Saddam's troops are suffering from a lack of food and equipment, and fighting hasn't even begun yet! So I wonder how much damage are we going to inflict upon Iraq before we are able to effect Saddam's surrender?

Personally I don't believe much of Saddam's army is going to be willing (or able) to stand up to our forces. I think they will surrender as soon as possible. I think that in many ways the mass exodus of his troops will present a greater problem to our forces than Saddam's military might. We'll be forced to hunt all over Iraq looking for someone who will fight us. All the while being saddled with greater numbers of his captured army all requiring food, shelter, medical attention, and all the basic necessities of life. So here we have this massive military build up in place to take out a nation that in all likelihood will collapse under it's own weight and inability to provide for itself under the extreme duress we have placed upon them.

So I wonder what's the point?

I suppose (to answer my own question) the point is to demonstrate to the world and all it's rogue nations what happens when you support and sponsor terrorism. To demonstrate in a real material way how the US means what we say. And that is a worthwhile endeavor. No one fears a "paper tiger" and so we must be willing to act on our threats or else our threats won't carry any weight in the future. But I wonder at the economy of it all. How often can we afford to do this, especially when our lives really aren't at stake (does anyone in our government really believe that Saddam is a threat to us)? Following through on our words is a must, but just looking at how the Iraqi situation is beginning to play out makes me wonder if the cost benefit we will gain is sufficient to justify this massive expense, especially during this time of economic upheaval?

What will we do if a nation like North Korea or China decides that they must act to counter the newly aggressive US (does anyone doubt that the North Koreans believe that they won’t be next)? The world is full of evil doers and it seems to me that they just might decide that working together may be an effective way to hurt our well-neigh unbeatable force? Bad guys always have a lousy since of timing and we aren't the only one's who understand the art of the “feint and parry”.
