Actually that has been a problem that has plagued us off and on since this board was founded. Obviously there are offenses that can not be tolerated if a forum is to exist. Every forum in existence makes this concession whether they admit it or not. I peopled the "Dead.org" forums for a few months last year. That was a suicide support group (meaning people wanting to commit suicide went there and received advice on how to do it and encouragement to do it). While you might imagine that such a place had no rules and no subject was taboo the truth is the forum was eventually policed from the outside (the board was pulled down one day with no notice or explanation, it just wasn't there anymore). That forum thought it could exist with no rules, but the reality was that eventually it gained the attention of someone with enough clout to enforce upon it their standard for existance. A standard it did not live up to and so it is no more.

That being said the AOF always has had to grapple with the problem of enforcing the rules. Since our rules are purposefully lax in the spirt of freedom we are forced at times to confront that nebulous notion in allowing freedom to exist in the first place. One time the AOF got into a flame war with a forum devoted to people with a sexual fetish for shit and gas (farts). As it turned out the forum was also home to people with an interest in kiddie porn (one must assume that sexual devients tend to stick together and flock to the same places, afterall if you get off from someone shitting on you or farting in your face that really isn't all that removed from getting off on the notion of having sex with defenseless children). At that point memebers of the AOF made it a point to spam that board out of existance. In doing so we gained the attention of one of the forum's members (Weeeeee). That idiot made it his business to spam the hell out of the AOF. After a couple of days of that Weeeeeee was banned. At that point a few of us objected and after a discussion the ban was lifted. Weeeeee proceeded to spam the board again and the ban was reinsituted.

If anything I'd like to think that at the AOF banning is a step that isn't taken lightly. Perhaps that's a fundamental difference between the Order and the AOF? While banning is a necessary step to be taken on a message board the way bannings are insituted and the attitude the board has in regards to such a drastic step epitomizes the temper of the board in general. I think the differences between the AOF and the Order are very illustrative of the way different people around the world view everyday necessities of life.
