Subject: Happy 70th year anniversary

It was exactly 70 years ago, yesterday, when former Alice in Dairyland 1952 contestant and state runner-up Jeannie Eleanor Huston of La Crosse was appointed as Miss Wisconsin 1952 by the Wisconsin Chamber of Commerce organization.

The civic sponsoring group were unable to stage a Miss Wisconsin pageant that year due to various reasons, so they selected Jeannie who was just named first runner-up in the 1952 Alice in Dairyland finals held in Seymour. However, at the time after the Alice finals, she was named as the first-ever Miss Wisconsin Universe (later known as Miss Wisconsin-USA), she would decline the title and didn't compete in the 1952 Miss United State (Miss USA) pageant held in Long Beach.

The La Crosse Central High School graduate would represent Wisconsin in the 1952 Miss America pageant in Atlantic City, NJ to select Miss America of 1953. Jeannie performed a cello number and enjoyed her time at the national pageant despite not winning.

It was 70 years ago yesterday on a hot summer day on August 8, 1952, Jeannie was officially crowned (as the appointed) Miss Wisconsin 1952 at the grand stand during the La Crosse Inter-State Fair held in her hometown. To this date, she is the only woman to have been appointed as Miss Wisconsin (Note, we also had two women to assume the title when that year's (1972 and 2011) Miss Wisconsin became Miss America.

Jeannie, now 89, is a widow living in the La Crosse area who keeps active, reads, and continues to watch the Miss America pageant (at least before it became an online pay-per-view broadcast). Happy Anniversary Jeannie, a forever Miss Wisconsin!
