Subject: It was on this day....

On this day in Wisconsin pageant history, only one woman was selected as Miss Wisconsin on a September 8:

1942---Miss Milwaukee, Charlotte Ruth Lemmer of Milwaukee was named Miss Wisconsin 1942.

It should be noted that there were two women that year to compete for the Miss Wisconsin title as Miss Milwaukee---Charlotte Ruth Lemmer and also Barbara Eunice Tullgren, both of Milwaukee. Each talented women were named Miss Milwaukee by different organizations and each were allowed to compete as Miss Milwaukee in the 1942 Miss Wisconsin pageant that was held, one time only, at Silver Lake/Manitowoc, Wisconsin.

This year marks the 80th year anniversary of that 1942 state pageant, which was the latest-ever state contest to send a Wisconsin entrant to the Miss America pageant.

Charlotte would immediately prepare for and leave for the 1942 Miss America pageant, held on September 12, 1942 at the then-Warner Theater in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The national title was won by Miss Texas, Jo-Carroll Dennison, who died in in Idyllwild, California last October 8, 2021 at age 97. Charlotte died in the 1980s, and Barbara Eunice (Tullgren) Monteiro passed away at age 82 in 2007.
