competitions charge for their program books because they're just that -- a very well put together, colored-page book with numerous pages that one would not expect to get for free. A local pageant book is much smaller. There are many expenses associated with a local competition, but the key is to try and get as many sponsors as possible -- like getting formers to donate a crown or sash, a local restaurant to provide the judges' meal, another food establishment to donate food for the contestants and volunteers the day of the competition and local hotels to donate rooms for the night for out-of-town judges or special guests. It is highly unlikely that a print shop will do the programs free of charge, so that is one expence that the organization should absorb.
