Subject: No pageant in Beloit tonight and a message for Alyssa Bohm

Today, Saturday, March 28th, would have been the 2020 Miss Beloit and Miss Beloit's Outstanding Teen competition pageant at Beloit Memorial High School in Beloit.

However, due to the Chinese Corona-virus health crisis, the pageant posted a Facebook message on March 17th noting that the show was postponed:

"NOTICE: Our competition scheduled for March 28th has been cancelled. Last week we made the decision to run an extremely scaled back event while adhering to all recommendations and mandates. Recent recommendations and mandates have led us to cancel the competition. If we are able to reschedule in the future, we will post an update. The safety of everyone involved with our organization is our first priority. Please stay safe everyone and thank you for your continued support."

Thankfully, the smart heads in Oshkosh made a gracious (and proper) allowance of giving a Saturday, May 2nd deadline to hold the pageant which hopefully also applies to the annual Miss Harbor Cities competition and the 2020 Miss Wisconsin Sweeps pageant previously scheduled for tomorrow, March 29th. However, state should have extended the deadline for Sunday, May 3rd, the day after a possible Miss Beloit show, to have the Sweeps event be last. But at least the Miss Beloit pageant posted this below on Facebook on March 20th as follow-up to the March 17 message:

"UPDATE: Per the Miss Wisconsin Organization, we have been given the opportunity to hold our competition no later than Saturday May 2, 2020. Should the bans and guidelines for mass gatherings remain in effect and/or the COVID-19 threat remain as high, the Miss Wisconsin Organization will revisit the situation as the deadline approaches and explore further alternatives. Many of you may not be aware that prior to the COVID-19 situation, our deadline to hold a competition each year is April 1st. We appreciate the Miss Wisconsin Organization giving up this opportunity."

The state board should post announcements on the Miss Wisconsin website and Facebook page, especially to calm some who fear that it might come to late to have the state pageant in June should the government not allow group events commence in early June or later.

Congratulations to Alyssa Bohm who is not hiding during this health crisis. Despite her Miss Wisconsin reign being dramatically altered because of the Chinese Corona-virus pandemic, as she can not visit schools, be at social events, or sign autographs with people in person. However, that dreaded disease won't stop Alyssa from using her time and public Facebook platform to do math skill demonstrations and join her father in entertaining magic tricks.

Now if only Alyssa would post a serious message aimed at youth of her age and under about staying at home during this pandemic, no college spring break trips or high school senior trips (against parents' warning and knowledge!!), washing hands, encourage adults to read to their children and complete the 2020 United States Census. That would then be a great way to get the message across to the bored youth stuck at home with nothing to do, other than to clean their room!! Lets applaud Alyssa for her efforts thus far (at least on Facebook), and hopefully she will contact local and state newspapers and television newsrooms to do remote interviews to enhance that above noted message to youth while also using this unique opportunity to promote her “Embracing Special Needs, Building Inclusive Communities” platform. If you don't ask, they won't have you on air or in the newspapers.

Just like with our state's 1940s war-time Miss Wisconsin winners who were selfless in helping the state and nation during a time of uncertainty and need, Alyssa can be that personable ambassador with a message and also demonstrate that with everyone's cooperation and good attitude, Wisconsin will have better days ahead.
