Subject: New Source for "Rigger-Made" Equipment

The compound term Rigger-made covers a wide range of different equipment items, none of which appear in quartermaster catalogues. Much of this equipment is special purpose in nature and were made in relatively limited production runs. More than often they were one of a kind.

Even the term "rigger-made" is a bone of contention for some authorities who maintain that after the intial design for an item was submitted the actual work was farmed out to local industry-sometimes comprised of nothing more than a ladies sewing circle. Others maintain that this assertion is in error and that the bulk of the actual work was performed by Service and Supply.

little documentation of this class of equipment exists. Aside from veterans accounts, period photographs and surviving specimens no pattern book outlining their fabrication is available to us.

what patterns that did exist for specific items that were made in any quantity, ususally for a specific unit, seem to have been used only by that unit for specific operations. A
munitions pouch used by the 517th PIR for the Rhine crossing is distinct from one used by the 505th In Normandy and so on.

The paucity of documention of these items has resulted in a number of very cheaply made poor quality reproductions being placed on the market.

A new source of reproduction "rigger-made" gear has been found.

Herb Zamar, who sews this type of thing as a hobby has taken what information is available to him regarding them and created a line of accurate rigger made equipment.

I personally ordered a holster for an M-8 flare pistol from him and was very pleased with the result. I intend to purchase some more equipment from him in the near future.

Herb does not have a website as such by has posted a photo album featuring his work at http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/hzamar/my_photos ( access the link to his album entittled "sales page". Herbs e-mail address is hzamar@yahoo.com .

I recommend this guys stuff.
