Good memory!
Mine is actually marked SV-7. I've also seen Jeeps marked with just a number for the vehicle #.
You're right that the line companies didn't have Jeeps at the front, at least not right away.
I looked through my copy of "Jeep Jeep Jeep," and there isn't a single company-marked Jeep in there.

Actually, with all the airborne-marked Jeeps out there today, there's more than would've been used by the Airborne during the entire war!
