Indeed the "jody call" did come into existance during WWII.
But at that time it was called the "duckworth chant" after the guy who came upwith it.

As for evidence I have the testimony of a number of WWII vets and also a WWII vintage home front recording of some of them on a 78RPM carnuba disk.

The film Battle ground has some good chants in it as do a number of other scources. Try a web search under Duckworth chant and jody call and see what you can come up with.

By the way. the "cadence count" existed before we got into the war but this consisted litterally of counting out the cadence "1, 2, 3, 4"!
