he ignored them anyways. he was too lost. too deep within himself to let any words touch him now. all of a sudden he was aware of the closenes between the two, aware that his bubble had been popped. he himself had not moved an inch for the hare. it didn't matter. such creatures were below him. as he felt her pace quicken with his he pushed harder, ignoring the stabbing in his chest and the foam he was so akwardy aware of that had started to seep through his coat. but nothing matters. he was uncomfortably aware of everything around him and he felt hemmed in. where to turn? where to run? there were only so many choices. but he took one no, and leaped suddeny off the trail, narrowly escaping the cutting bark of a large elm as he dove into the under brush and thundered on, his steps rattling the trees around him, drving small creatures wiht more instinct than the rabbit, out of his path. darkness was seeping into the sky, as if his flux in mood had brought it about. twigs snapped underfoot, and twice he faltered, twice he regained balance in time to avoid collision with some overgrown weeds. the footfalls required more precision here, off the beaten path where only the occasional invading root was an avoidable nuisance, as he swerved around a small birch one of it's lower branches reached through to him and dragged its sharpened fingers across his whithers. small lines of red welled up instantly but the pain went unnoticed. he was too far gone.
