Not sure if this fits, but just off the top of my head, I would say how gathering information changed. At first, it was the library and Giles musty books. Jenny poo-pooed his books and scolded him for not living in the 21th century. Of course, the transfering of information brought out a beast which nearly killed Willow. When Buffy and Willow went to uni, Willow got excited about the 'real' library. During this period, Giles no longer felt needed. Later, when Willow broadbanded the books and computers during her evil phase; it was Giles who questioned her methods. In the last season, we saw Dawn go back to the old books to open a gateway to the first slayer. If I thought about it some more, I could probably, maybe, make a coherent arguement on the subject.

One thing that bothered me though; in the first ep of ATS, "In the City of..", we see Angel in a public library, after hours, using three computers at once. I had really hoped they were going to go that way, but all we got was comic relief Angel who couldn't even use a cell phone. bleh

Which had books that worked like mystical computers - he could call up whatever he wanted, but he had to read the results in book format.

In the commentary for "City of...", it's mentioned that they'd originally planned on Angel having an accomplice who worked at the public library, who would allow him access after hours. However, the plan was eventually scrapped.
