Subject: okay, that was......a good movie :) *only very vague spoilers...mostly just opinions inside*
In reply to: Doyle 's message, "Two things I really wanna know..." on 00:41:47 12/16/03 Tue

To answer your questions, first:

1) The end credits song was okay. If I remember the credits correctly, it was sung by Annie Lennox. It didn't really strike me, but I was kind of assimilating the movie at the moment, and trying to wipe my face of tears, so I may not have given it the attention it deserves.

(yes, I cried)

2) I would have a hard time rating it. I still believe the Fellowship is the best of the three, and I don't think that's all my "I always like the first movie best" thing, either. It was just...really, really well done. Simple but bold concepts, deep characters, great action scenes, beautiful scenery, a compelling story, a journey that we follow along with. The second movie departed from that journey a lot...only a small portion of the movie was dedicated solely to Frodo and Sam's goal. The diversification of new characters, settings, and long words grew a little tiresome. While some of the scenes dragged on a bit, over all the whole movie was saved by the brilliant fight scenes, more character exploration, and arresting imagery.

The third movie kind of brings us back to the journey, which was good. There were still quite a few parts that dragged (though not as bad as the Ents, thank God), but over all the movie did a really good job of wrapping it all up. Some characters didn't get as much screen time as they did in the first and / or second movie(s), but others got more. It ended well (though I already knew how it ended, I was gratified to see how well it was done on screen, as well).

So, were I pressed, I would say that the first movie is the best, and the second two are tied. They're both really good for different reasons.

And while I don't want to spoil anyone who doesn't want to be spoiled, I've compiled a short (only vaguely spoilery) list of likes / dislikes.

Stuff I liked:

Everyone kicking ass.
Sam and Frodo's friendship.
Legolas in a blue tunic. *sigh*
Climactic drama.
Lots of character exploration for those who hadn't had much yet.
Billy Boyd's singing voice.
The score.
The sketch-like portraits of the characters at the end credits.

Stuff I didn't like so much:

The loss of screen time / development for some characters.
The few bits that dragged.
Every new setting that was named "The (insert name here) of (insert another long name here)".
The many, many, computer generated characters and monsters strewn about like extras in a George Lucas film.

Anyhoo, I will tell more if you wish, but I don't want to spoil you unwillingly. All in all, it was a great flick, and a satisfying end to the trilogy. I'm sad it's over :( And that's a hell of a lot more than I can say for the Matrix Trilogy, so good on Peter Jackson!
