Subject: I don't know what's scarier...
In reply to: Bracken 's message, "Filling up board space with 'deep' thoughts." on 19:45:22 07/02/03 Wed

your questions, or the fact that I've thought about the subject enough to have actual answers, as if it was some kind of poll.

Choosing Your Profession
Do you get the idea from a book or movie? Another influence? Are you just bored? Or do you just wake up one day and say to yourself, 'Yep. I'm going to be a serial killer."?

Actually, when it crosses my mind, it has usually been spawned by one of two things: A) Someone has just pissed me off, and I think about how easy it would be to just give them a nudge off the curb in front of a car, or something, and then how I could hide the murder in a string of other, random-like murders, or B) I read a mystery novel or watch a drama in which a serial murderer makes a fatal mistake, and I think God, I could do better than that.

Choosing a Victim
Once you establish that you are indeed going to be a serial killer, you [I assume] have to choose who your victims are going to be. Do you kill only men? Only women? Children? Does age matter? Skin colour? Hair colour? Eye colour? Race? Religious background? Are your victims random? Do you know them? Do you know them personally or do you know them from stalking?

If I were going to become a serial murderer, I think I'd be the vigilante sort...killing off people who should have gone to prison. People who got away with rape and shit. They piss me off, and people getting off scot free happens all too often, at least in this country. Unfortunately, one of the biggest mistakes some serial killers make is choosing their victims for a reason. This is usually the first step in the police being able to track down the killer, though his / her associations with the dead people, or finding out how he / her knows them, etc. So if I wanted to be a really smart serial killer who doesn't get caught, I'd make it be entirely random. The problem is, I'd feel too bad about doing that. Like...I wouldn't want to kill any *good* people. Innocent people. So yeah, I'd probably go after like, acquitted rapists.

Choosing a Method
Okay, once you've decided that you are indeed going to be a serial killer and you've chosen your victims, you [again, I assume] have to decide how you're going to kill them. Do you stab them? If so, do you make sure that it's a quick as possible or do you take your sweet stabby time? How 'bout strangulation? Drowning? Torture? Shooting? Does each victim get the same 'treatment' or do you do it a little differently with each one?

I think that to an extent it helps to have a set thing. A hook. Like Ted Bundy's sling. But then again, that was one of the things that eventually identified him to potential victims. And really, when push comes to shove, it's best to be prepared for anything and be ready to break out of your mold at any time. I'd say different methods for different people. Though if I went with my acquitted rapist plan, I'd have to finish up with a nice dismemberment of the offending member.

Your "thing"
After you've killed your victim, do you just walk away and go home? Or do you have a "thing"? Do you leave a note for the police? Carve your initials into the victim? Do you take something from the victim (other then their life)? Clothing? Finger? A leg? When you're killing them do you have a mask on? A full one or half? Or do you make sure that your face is the last thing that they see?

I would take absolutely nothing with me. That's stupid. Trophies are just waiting to be taken into evidence and used against you in a court of law. Likewise, it would not do to leave any marks on or near the victim that could potentially tie you to them, such as initials, fingerprints, bite marks, etc. While I like the idea of being in communication with police (because, like several known serial murderers, one of my problems is that I need attention and I think I'm smarter than them), it's perhaps THE biggest flaw in the thinking of most serial murderers, and I would have to refrain from doing so. Though I do have this little fic I was thinkingo of writing where the lead character's a rapist-killing vigilante who falls in love with the homicide detective who's assigned to take her down, and he's drawn to her despite himself because even though what she's doing goes against his strong code of ethics, his own sense of morality wants these men punished, too, and.....uh, never mind.

And yes, I'd want the men to definitely know why I was killing them, so I'd unmask only when it would be too late for the information to do them any good. Mua.

Deep thoughts, Brack. Deep thoughts.
