Jim, even as late as '78 you have no idea what it was like in the sixties. Remember that National Service had only just finished. Early '62 it was more like an Edwardian public school trying to be a Military Academy. By '78 I think the winds of change were blowing swiftly through society and the Army, in particular, was starting to get pretty 'touchy, feely'. One of the main reasons I decided to call it a day in '74. But, I can't fault your observation about the standard of soldier that came out of boys service. Bear in mind though Jim, that compared to Woolwich (17 Trg Regt) and their 17 week course, we did two and a bit years so one would hope that we were of a different calibre. I'll keep the stories coming from my side and look forward to hearing the 'defence' (only joking Jim) from your side.
