Jim, I think the incident that was supposed to have led to us wearing the 'White' lanyard, took place during the war in the Crimea. A gun position was, supposedly, over-run and the guns abandoned only to be re-taken by the 'Sappers' and returned to us. A load of old guff! and no proof what-so-ever has ever been offered in evidence. I 'pinched' an article written by another Gunner from another site and, as far as I can see, is a pretty comprehensive account of the Lanyard story.

Many years ago, when I was a youngster in the Bty, I read just about every one of the Sven Hassle books and was a great fan of 'Sven', 'Portious', 'The Legionair', 'Tiny' and the 'Old Man' etc. Most blood thirsty and erotic books I had ever read. As a contrast I also enjoyed the 'Dusty Fog', J.T. Edson books. As did a lot of the lads in the Bty.
