Roy, Jim, don't you agree that it's so sad, that three men, of our age and experience, feel so utterly despondent at the, seemingly, slippery slope towards total anarchy that we all feel this country is on? How much is it down to our age? Do you remember people of our age, when we were young, feeling exactly the same way about us? What with our degenerate music (Rock & Roll), our 'devil may care' attitudes towards drugs, sex and the whole sixties revolution? Not that I remember being a part of that scene. As I have said before, I went from a rag-arsed schoolboy to a man, all in the space of two years as a boy soldier, but I was aware of what was going on around me and wanted, desperately, to be a part of it as much as I could.
The difference in those days though, was that, no matter how wild the sixties and seventies were, there was an underlying sense of responsibility for our own actions. We knew what was wrong, what was right and what we could, hope to, get away with. We knew where the boundaries of what was acceptable and unacceptable behaviour in our society were and, though we pushed the envelope at times, we knew not to cross those lines. Most importantly, we knew what the consequences would be if we did, and were caught! That is where, I see, the problem as being today.
I don't think the youngsters of today are any more anarchic, disobedient or unlawful than we were, at that age. There is no more malice or evil in them than there was in any of us at the same age BUT, and this is the difference. I think that the boundaries have been blurred and the consequences of crossing the line have been, to a large extent, removed. Our headlong rush, during the last twenty to thirty years, into the whole Liberal, fairness for all, wrapping everyone in cotton wool and generally trying to protect everybody from the hard knocks in life has led us to become TOO soft. Life is not soft and cuddly. Life is not fair and there HAVE to be losers, as well as winners. Life is not easy and is, sometimes brutal and hard. The sooner we face these facts and get back to a more realistic philosophy in life, the sooner we can start to, once again, have some pride in ourselves and, more importantly, try to instill a bit of pride into our offspring. ( I was going to say, what we need another war! but the state this country is in today, I fear we would come second).
