Dave, I never had any problems getting our fag entitlement across the water in N.Ireland whilst serving in BAOR. Being single at the time we used to leave our ration cards with the rear party at the Battery Office and they used to send the fags across to us on active service. Believe a lot of the pads wives used to do the same. The extended Tours used to be for Four months at a time and it was much later that they extended these tours to Six months. Active Service Pay was fifty-pence a day extra. Beer ration was two cans of cylindrical joy a day per man! And as much Comfy-bum crap paper as you could use! Transportation from the UK used to be either from Liverpool docks via the ferry or flights to Aldergrove from Brize-Norton. Only once did the Regiment go via the scenic route by LSL from Marchwood just outside Southampton. From BAOR flights were either from Hannover or Gutersloh straight to Aldergrove. The main things that I remember about tours over there was the constant patrols where yours truly usually ended up as 'Tail-end-Charlie' walking backwards most of the time with a perminent crick in my neck from scanning the area. Sanger banging was another pain in the arse! Mobile patrolling and 'Tea-stops' and of course the lack of sleep. The smell of CS gas and Egg banjo's are a constant reminder of those days!...The only time that you could relax was when you had to go back on Court cases when you were billetted in the 'Maidstone' and you were allowed to attend the 'Disco's' either on that ship or go over to Palace Bks meat market!..If you couldn't get layed there, then there was something wrong with you!!.......N.Ireland was a single man's paradise in them days!....Don't you agree?
