Subject: Episode 8.11 - "THE POWERS THAT DO" by Linda_Delurked (Part I)

Previously on Buffy the Vampire Slyer:

Tara says in voice over “Willow, you are using too much magic!” as Willow uses the lethes bramble to make Tara forget the argument. Tara packing to leave as Willow says in voiceover “Are you saying you’re going to leave me?” Willow telling Amy that if she’s her friend she’ll leave her alone. Tara and Willow making up as Willow tells Buffy in voice over “No more spells, I’m finished.” Warren shooting in the back garden. Buffy lying wounded on the ground as Xander hovers over her and calls her name. Tara falls to the ground. Willow holding her and seeing red. Willow absorbing the books in The Magic Box. Warren being flayed alive. Xander telling Willow he loves her and Willow crying in his arms as her hair turns red again. Amy telling Kennedy about the spell she cast on Willow in ‘The Killer in Me’, then sending her to the back garden where Willow almost shoots her. They kiss. Raven telling Buffy and Faith that they are the chosen three. Willow giving Dawn Tara’s book of shadows. Raven delivering the scroll to Amy. The gang fighting the demon from last weeks show, as in voiceover Buffy tells them they can’t let it deliver the package to Raven. Amy in the bath of blood, eyes glowing yellow. The gang bring the box back to The Magic Box.

The gang are gathered around the circular table in the shop, as Willow’s hands wave over the box,
which is now sitting amongst a circle of candles. There is a glow, and the lid retracts, revealing
something wrapped in cloth. Willow shares an uncertain glance with the others, before lifting the
bundle out. She slowly unwraps it until she can see what it is…

SLO-MO CAMERA SHOT: Close-up of Willow’s face, gasping in sheer terror….
Her hands releasing the terrifying object….
A glimpse of something shiny falling to the ground…
A metallic clang as it strikes the floor….
And a close-up of an old-fashioned gold pocket watch, with a carving of a serpent coiled around the clock face, biting it’s own tail, decorated with runic inscriptions.

Willow turns away from the others, her face hidden in her hands.

Kennedy: “Willow? You okay?”

Willow turns around. She’s all black eyed and veiny. She doesn’t look angry, just very, very scared. Kennedy jumps backwards in shock.

Xander (moves forward) “Will! What’s wrong!”

Willow tries to speak, but is suddenly swept off her feet by a burst of power. Everyone else is thrown back as Willow rises slowly into the air, surrounded by a swirl of power, which takes the form of a massive snake. The snake coils around Willow. The entire room is filled with noise as objects swirl around, caught in the power current. The power/snake smashes into Willow’s chest. She screams.

Kennedy: (screaming above the noise) “Willow!”

Kennedy tries to reach Willow. Faith grabs her and holds her back.

Faith “No!”

Shot of Willow, head thown back, her feet and arms spread wide. She looks as though she’s in pain. Buffy staggers to her feet and runs for the watch. Another burst of power hits Willow and she screams again. Buffy grabs the watch and brings it down full force on the floor, trying to break it. Nothing happens. She tries again.

Kennedy is struggling against Faith, trying to get to Willow.

Kennedy: “Willow! Willow!”

Faith “Kennedy, let Buffy handle it!”

Giles is rifling through the shelves, pulling books onto the floor, looking for something. Anya staggers over to him.

Anya: “Which one?”

Giles says something to her which can’t be heard above the din. Shot of Willow as her hair starts to turn black.

Kennedy: “Oh God! Willow, please, hold on!”

Faith: (still holding Kennedy back, yells to Giles over her shoulder) “Hurry up and do something!”

Anya and Giles are both scouring the shelves. Anya grabs a book and hands it to Giles. Xander comes running to Buffy with an axe and smashes at the watch without a moment’s hesitation. He keeps hitting and hitting, but the watch remains undamaged. Dawn throws Buffy a sword, who joins in. Giles is chanting a spell from a book. He looks up for a second as he chants and stops cold. Dawn screams Buffy’s name. Buffy and Xander look up and are obviously shaken by what they see.

Willow is bleeding blackness. It streams from her hair, her eyes, her mouth, her hands, and drips onto the floor. It pools for a second, then takes the form of a parchment (just like the one Amy wanted from Raven). Giles runs forward to grab it, but it disappears. Willow falls to the floor unconscious, her hair returning to normal.

[credits]

Kennedy: “Willow!”

Faith lets go of Kennedy, who runs forward and cradles the unconscious Willow in her lap. Faith goes over to them, and Xander checks on Willow. She moans and moves slightly.

Buffy: “Giles, what was that?”

Giles: “I’m not sure…”

Giles very carefully picks up the watch. Dawn and Buffy stare at it.

Dawn: (whispering) “It’s not even scratched.”

Buffy: “Should we destroy it?”

Willow: “No.”

They turn to Willow. She winces as she sits up in Kennedy’s arms.

Willow: (breathless) “It wasn’t the watch. It was …something else…”

Giles: (walking over to Willow) “Could you tell what it was?”

Willow: “Big…nasty…powerful…(shakes her head) That’s all I got…”

Kennedy: “I don’t understand? Why did it attack you? Was it because you were holding the watch?”

Willow: “No, the watch…it’s power…it called to something inside me. My magic, the dark magic, inside me. It… recognised it. It triggered something. And whatever attacked me, it knew. (looks up at Giles) It tried to kill me.”

Giles: “How did you stop it?”

Willow: “I didn’t. It wasn’t strong enough. I felt it try to take my power too.”

Giles: “That would be impossible. The power is part of you.”

Willow: “I know. I mean, it knows. It failed, but it took something else. (tearfully) I felt it in my mind, Giles… I felt it… I know I recognised the power. I know I’ve felt it before, but now… I don’t remember … I can’t…”

Kennedy strokes Willow’s hair. Willow leans back into her arms and closes her eyes.

Willow: (softly) “It’s just not there any more.”

Scene: Amy’s Bathroom. Day

Shot of a line of cleaning products lined up along the edge of the bath. The camera switches to Amy, who is scrubbing the bath for all it’s worth. There are still bloodstains smeared inside the bath. Amy is visibly upset.

Scene: Back Garden. Day.

Amy walks out the back door of a house, holding a small bunch of bloodstained washrags. As she goes to throw them out, we see hundreds of empty packets from the Butchers already inside the bin. Amy throws the washrags on top and slams the bin shut.

Amy stands in the garden for a moment, her eyes closed. She still looks upset. She opens her eyes with a sigh and looks down. Her hands are bloodstained.

Scene: Buffy’s house. Day

Spike is on the phone.

Spike: “Now you’re sure you don’t need me?”

Shot of Buffy on her mobile phone at the magic box.

Buffy: “No, not yet. But as soon as we find out what did this I’ll call you in to come help me kill it.”

Spike: “Is Red okay?”

Buffy looks over to where Xander and Kennedy are fussing over Willow. She seems subdued. Buffy lowers her voice.

Buffy: “She’s still kind of in shock. Whatever this thing was, it hit her pretty hard. (angily) I swear,
Spike, as soon as I find out what did this …”

Spike: (trying to calm her) “We’ll find it, Buff, then we’ll kill it. Just like you said.”

Buffy: “Yeah. Just like we always do. Tell Clem I’m sorry I can’t make it?”

Spike “I will. I take it Xander is going to stay there too?”

Buffy looks over at Xander again. He’s bringing Willow a glass of water.

Buffy: “Yeah, I think so.”

Spike: “Figured he would. I’ll drop by the Magic Box once it gets dark. (very serious) Call if you need anything.”

Buffy: (smiling on the other end of the line) “I will.”

Spike: “You promise?”

Buffy: “I promise.”

Spike: “Fine. See you later.”

Buffy: “Bye.”

Spike walks into the sitting room.

Spike: “Looks like it’s just us, lads.”

Clem: “Is Willow okay?”

Spike: “She’s a bit shook up. (suddenly suspicious) How the hell did you know?”

Clem silently tugs at his ears.

Spike: (sighs) “Never mind.”

Andrew: “So can we start the DVD now?”

Spike: “Might as well.”

Andrew jumps up and turns the DVD on. He grins happily as he sits back on the couch between Spike and Clem. There is a fanfare and then The Star Wars music starts to play. Clem reaches for the snacks.

Scene: Int. Bedroom. Day.

Amy is sitting on her bed, holding a scroll in her hands (which are now clean.) She opens up the scroll. We see words written in a strange language, along with an illustration of what looks like a pool filled with blood. There is an illustration of a coiled snake, and another of the same snake symbol that was on the watch. Amy rolls the scroll up and looks across the room to her bookshelf. There’s a row of occult books lined up on the shelf. Amy pulls one out. It’s called “Blood Rites and Sacrifices.” She starts to read.

Scene: Magic Box. Day.

Willow: “For the hundreth time, I don’t need to rest!”

Shot of Kennedy, Xander and Giles looking worried.

Willow: “I’m fine now. Honest!”

Kennedy: “I know… I know you are. It’s just …I should go with you.”

Willow: “Kennedy, I’m okay now. I have a few ideas that I’ll be faster researching by myself. Besides, I’ll be trying to pick up those vibes again. (of Xander and Kennedy’s look) Gently this time, and it’s easier to do that when I’m alone. (turns to Giles) Giles, tell them!”

Giles: “Well, you have just been through a particularly vicious magical attack.”

Willow: (coldly) “I’m aware of that.”

Giles: “Well perhaps it would be wise for you to…”

Willow: (interrupting) “Look! The sooner we find out what did this to me the sooner we can stop it. I’m better off researching this alone. (Points to the table, which is laden with books) It’s not like you don’t have enough to keep you occupied!”

Kennedy: “We’re just worried about you Willow. That spell…I’ve never seen anything like that!”

Anya raises her hand. “I have!”

Everyone looks at her.

Anya: “Well, not exactly like that, but close. (pause) At least, the more I think about it, the more it reminds me…(pause) Well…(to Willow) Remember that time two years ago when you went all evil?”

Willow: (sarcastically) “I vaguely recall it, yeah.”

Anya: “And remember the spell you did to absorb the evil books which wiped out almost one sixteenth of our stock before you went and destroyed all the rest in your rampage anyway?”

Willow: (light dawning) “…yes…”

Anya: None of which of course could be insured so there was no way of claiming..”

Willow: “Anya…the spell…”

Anya: “Well, it looked like that one.”

Everyone keeps staring.

Anya: “Only… in reverse.”

Kennedy: “What? That doesn’t make any sense!”

Willow: “(Getting excited) No! No, she’s right! (turning to Giles) It’s from the books! Something I absorbed from those books! That’s the power I recognised! That’s what it took from me!”

Giles: “Anya, do you still have an inventory of the books?”

Anya: “Of course! I’d kept backup inventory files at home. I was saving them for when Willow graduated and started earning so that we could discuss punitive damages.”

Willow: “That’s great we can…..Wait! You were what?”

Quick shot of Dawn looking amused.

Giles: “Print out a list of the restricted section, please. It will narrow the search considerably.”

Willow: “Okay, you guys research that. I’m going to the library. (as Kennedy opens her mouth to speak) By myself! I think I know some books that will help jog my memory.”

Kennedy: “If you need anything…”

Willow: “I’ll call. (to Buffy and Giles) I’ll check back here later.”

Buffy: (hesitating for a second) “Okay.”

Willow leaves.

Cut to Spike, Andrew and Clem on the sofa.

Spike: (cheerfully) “Yeeeeaaaahhh! That’s the stuff! I love this movie!”

Clem: “You know, I wouldn’t have seen you as a Star Wars fan.”

Spike: “Best bit of bloody sci-fi there is and better than that touchy feely Star Trek stuff. Besides I first saw it just after I did my second slayer…..back when I was evil of course. Mind you, that was the original version before they stuck all these new bits in.”

Clem: “You know I was in a demon bar the night George Lucas came in looking for directions….”

Spike: “Not the bloody ‘I was there when they got the idea for the Cantina scene’ again”.

Clem: “Well, I was. I was having a drink with a tall black tar demon with an asthma condition that I think he….”

Spike: “And he based Yoda on you I suppose.”

Andrew: (annoyed) “Can we get back to the movie…. Anyway, You just don’t get the subtle intricacies of Trek.”

Spike: “Subtle intricacies are no match for a good lightsabre battle, Obi-wannabe. Besides, I know you’re only watching Enterprise to oogle that Captain whatshisname.”

Andrew: “That is so not true!”

Andrew pouts on the sofa, arms crossed.

(pause)

Andrew: “And his name is Jonathan Archer!”

Clem and Spike start sniggering.

Andrew: “Oh, what do you know about great television anyway? (Speaking as though it’s a terrible accusation.) You watch Passions!”

Spike: “Hey! I’ll have you know Passions is an art form!”

Andrew: “Oh sure. I mean if an autographed toilet seat is art then passions must be…”

Spike: “Listen Geek Skywalker I’ll give you an art for- (get’s distracted by the movie) oh hang on! This is the best bit!”

*shot of the TV screen, which is showing Alderaan getting blown up by The Empire. Spike, Andrew and Clem give a big cheer as the planet blows up*

Scene: Library. Day.

Willow is wandering around the library. She scans the books on the shelves. There’s a quick shot of Willow in the magic box earlier, being swept off her feet by the swirling power. Willow stands still for a moment. Another shot of her in the magic box, screaming as her hair turns black. Willow shakes her head and moves on.

She wanders through the shelves, touching the books as she passes. One volume takes her interest. She reaches over to take it. Someone else puts a hand on the book at the same moment. Willow looks up and sees Amy, who seems just as shocked to see her.

Scene: Magic Box. Day

Note: ‘Linger’ by The Cranberries is playing on the radio in the Magic Box.

Buffy looks up from her book, clearly frustrated. She sees Dawn with her head buried in a large text. There are dozens of books scattered all around her, some open, some not. Buffy smiles, gets up and walks over to her.

Buffy: “Sure you have enough books there Dawnie?”

Dawn: (very serious) “I’m not sure. I mean I’ve been cross referencing the symbolic compendium with the list of lesser deities and demons but I’m still not…(catches on) Oh…sarcasm…The real Slayer power.”

Buffy: “It’s okay. (spots Tara’s Book of Shadows among the pile and picks it up) You’re still reading Tara’s book?”

Dawn: “Yeah. She had a list of texts that she found useful for researching. Guess she did a lot of that, hanging out with us and all.”

Buffy: “Yeah, she did. But I thought this was a spell book?”

Dawn: (perking up) “Actually a book of shadows is a lot more than that. It’s sort of a collection of all a witch’s knowledge. (starts leafing through pages, showing Buffy) I mean, there’s spells, but there’s also rituals, recipes for incense, herbs, correspondences…”

Giles looks up from behind the counter and watches Buffy and Dawn talking. He seems pleased.

Buffy: “Correspondences? There’s letters in there?”

Dawn: (smiling) “No it’s… kinda like a magical encyclopaedia? It tells you what corresponds with what. Like directions – North is associated with earth, South is fire, West is water, East is air…”

Buffy: (Impressed) “You’re really getting into this! Following in Willow and Tara’s footsteps? (realises what she’s said.) In a straight way I mean. (realises what’s she’s said again) I mean, unless you found that you were attracted to… I mean (panics and settles for-) you know I love you no matter what, right?”

Dawn: (giving Buffy a look) “I’m still just reading through the basics on magick. (turns back to the book.) It’s interesting though. Plus this was Tara’s mirror book too.”

Buffy: “Mirror book?”

Tara: “Sort of like a diary? Normally it’s two different books, but since Tara had to hide hers from her Dad, she kept them together.”

Buffy: “Oh. (peering over Dawn’s shoulder) She say anything about me?”

Dawn: (pretending to look for a reference) “Something about buying your little sister lots of shoes and letting her have a tattoo …”

Buffy: “Gimme that!”

Buffy and Dawn mock fight for the book, Buffy then tries tickling her sister which gives Dawn the giggles. Xander looks up from his pile of books.

Xander: “Ladies! Ladies! Let’s be civilised! Or at least wait until I get a camera…”

Anya: (walking behind Xander, carrying a pile of books) “Honestly Xander, is sex all you think about?”

Everyone stares at Anya as she plonks the books on the table. She makes a contented sound and starts sorting through them.

Cut to the library. Willow and Amy are standing over the book.

Willow: “What are you doing here?”

Amy: (taking book and clutching it close) “Reading! That’s what libraries are for, aren’t they?”

Willow: (snatching the book) “Well this is interesting! (reading the title) ‘Deities and their totem animals.’ Doing a little research?”

Amy: (snatching book back) “Yes, as it happens. What do you want it for anyway?”

Willow: “Well here’s the thing. We fought a demon the other day. A demon that was delivering something to a vamp- (stops herself just in time) a vampire called Raven.”

Amy: “So? I don’t know any vampires. Except for the ones *you* hang out with!”

Willow: “It had a watch. A watch with a snake on it.”

Amy: (laughing) “Oh please! Thousands of beings use a snake symbol!”

Willow: “This one’s power responded to me. It triggered something inside me.”

Amy: (furious) “What?”

Willow: “I said it…”

Amy: “It responded to you?”

Willow looks confused by Amy’s reaction.

Amy: “Ooh that (spitting out every word)…that is just…so…typical!”

Willow: (puzzled)“What?”

Amy: “Every time! Every time I find something that’s mine you go and take it from me! Every single magick I learn, you’ve done it better! Every being I contact, it’s like ‘Hey! Where’s the redhead?’ Every source of power I touch, it’s ‘Been there! Done that! Flayed someone alive with it!’”

Willow grabs Amy and pulls her into a secluded corner. Shoves her up against a wall.

Willow: (darkly) “Tell me about this power.”

Scene: Magic Box. Day.

Giles: (walking out from behind the counter, book in hand) “I’m afraid there’s not much to tell. Or rather, there’s a great deal, just not much that may be of relevance to us.”

Buffy: “There’s got to be a reference to this watch somewhere. I mean, it’s powerful. Willow felt it.”

Giles: “Unfortunately I can find no reference to it in any of the texts. As far as I can deduce it is not connected to the horsemen in any way, but more than that I cannot say. Of course a great deal of priceless information was lost when the council was destroyed. It may have been that they had the only information on this particular object.”

Buffy: “Well, what about the symbol? What does the snake mean?”

Giles: (sits down at the table with a volume, looks exasperated) “That is the question. It could mean anything. The snake symbol itself is used in most cultures, often as a symbol for good. (Giles opens the book and points to an illustration similar to the engraving on the watch – a snake biting it’s own tail) This particular symbol is known as the ouroboros. It can be found in Greek, Persian, Egyptian and Gnostic art with numerous variations.”

Buffy: (peering over Giles’ shoulder) “What does it mean?”

Giles: “It’s generally used to represent eternity. It’s a symbol of time, immortality, the beginning and the end. (sighs) As I said, it’s a very common symbol, and there are thousands of creatures that are connected to snakes in some way.”

Dawn: (quietly) “Make that hundreds of thousands of creatures. I’m sorting through the deities in alphabetical order.”

Buffy: “How far have you gotten?”

Dawn: (looking apologetic) “Brigid.”

Buffy: (sighing) “Great. We had to bump into a big bad that’s clued into the pop culture. Why couldn’t it be a fashion victim power. You know, an eccentric power? Maybe British?

Giles gives Buffy a whithering look

Buffy: (brightly) So! Do we know anyone we have met before who was connected with snakes?"

Dawn: "Well there was always Mayor Wilkins"

Buffy: "Yeah. Him. I always felt he was trying to overcompensate for something."

Xander "Maybe he had a twin sister who is now coming for revenge."

Dawn "There was never one listed"

Anya: "I cant see him having an unmentioned sister suddenly appear out of
thin air. That doesn't happen in reality "

Everyone looks at Anya and Dawn gives her a daggered look.

Anya "Okay, normally."

Buffy. "Well...lets put that one in the 'if we get desperate' pile. Anyone else"

Dawn "Glory raised that Cobra thing"

Buffy "True"

Anya: "What about Willow?"

Xander: "What?"

Anya: "Well that wasn't a fluffy kitten she threw up when we raised Buffy"

Dawn: (angry): I hardly think that Wil..."

Buffy: (quickly changing the subject) "Anything else?"

Anya: (moving to behind the counter) "Fine, Don't listen to me. I'm going to
make a drink'

Xander: "Indiana Jones hated snakes when he was trapped with them in Raiders
of the Lost Ark"

Dawn: "And this is relevant because?"

Xander: "Just that snakes have this evil thing going for them. You just
wouldn't get the same effect if you replaced them with puppies or even cute
little rabbits.

A candle comes flying out from behind the counter, hitting Xander on the
back of the head.

Dawn: “You really would have thought he would have stopped mentioning (whispers) b.u.n.n.i.e.s. before now.”

Anya: (yelling from off screen) “I can spell you know!”

Giles: (Gives Dawn & Xander a look) “Indeed. Well, assuming Harrison Ford is not behind all this I think we should get back to the watch. On it’s own it may not be much to go on. However, we do have it in our possession. That in itself may prove useful. And I do believe that I may have a lead on the four horsemen. Or at the very least a location that’s worth investigating.”

Buffy: “Fine, I’ll take any lead we have. But I want us to concentrate on this new threat, Giles. Whatever this new power is, Raven has access to it. And it’s already made a target of Willow.

Faith: (walking over to them) “You think it’ll come after her again, B?”

Xander and Dawn look at Buffy, concerned.

Buffy: (To Faith) “Maybe not immediately, not since it’s wiped her mind. But Willow said that it tried to kill her first, and then it tried to take her power.”

Faith: “Which means it thought it was powerful enough to kill her, or steal her power.”

Buffy: “Which may mean it has been in the past.”

Faith: “Or will be in the future.”

Scene: Summers House

Clem: “Green”

Spike: “Definitely red”

Andrew: “I’d have the purple lightsabre like Samuel Jackson”

Clem: “I loved that bit with Yoda in the last one”

Spike: “Yeah, pretty nifty little bugger, for a short-arse”

Scene: Library. Day.

Amy: “No! (slaps Willow away) It’s mine! You have enough of your own power!”

Willow: “What are you mixed up in this time Amy? Who are you hurting now?”

Amy: “Not all of us go all black eyed and evil as soon as life throws us a curveball.”

Willow steps back, obviously thrown by Amy’s comment.

Willow: (acidly) “I’m not proud of what I did, but I couldn’t help…”

Amy: “Couldn’t help what? Grieving? Feeling lonely? Getting upset because your girlfriend died? My God, if you’d been through one tenth what I’ve gone through in my life…”

Willow: “Oh yeah, because turning yourself into a rat must have been so traumatic for you…”

Amy: “You don’t know me! You don’t have a clue what my life has been like! At least Buffy tried to be my friend! All you ever cared about was the magic! And now you’re the great Willow! She of experience and wisdom! She who is so full of it! You don’t get to tell me what to do!”

Willow: “You’re over your head again, aren’t you?”

Amy looks uncertain for a second.

Willow: “That’s what the book is for, isn’t it? You’ve tapped into something. You’re involved in this and you don’t even know what it is!”

Amy: “So what! So I don’t know everything about this new power, I don’t care! I’m learning! Leaning just like I was in the coven before you got me kicked out!”

Willow: (incredulous) “They kicked you out because you cast a spell that almost killed my girlfriend!”

Amy: “All I did was punish you for your mistakes! The way any real witch would! You abused your power! You got away with murder, literally, and now you want to tell me what power I can or can’t connect with?”

Willow: “That power you want so much helped me kill people.”

Amy: “Well maybe I’m not the short tempered, cold hearted murderer you are.”

Willow slaps Amy across the face. Amy laughs.

Amy: “That’s the second time you’ve slapped me, Willow. You blamed Warren for it last time. Who’s fault is it now? Mine?”

Willow looks uncertain.

Amy: “Looks like that hard won control may not be so perfect. Maybe you should run back to your English friends? (Amy laughs again.) You really should have gotten to know Warren before you killed him. You two had so much in common.”

A look of pure anger crosses Willow’s face.

Amy: “I’ll bet Katrina and Tara are comparing notes right…”

Amy is cut short as Willow grabs her by the throat and shoves her back against the wall. Amy is lifted off the ground. Willow’s eyes are glowing black. Amy doesn’t look scared, she looks defiant.

Amy: (slightly croaky) “I rest my case.”

Willow doesn’t move.

Amy: “Gonna add me to the list of kills, Willow?”

Willow lets Amy go. She closes her eyes and shudders. Amy doesn’t move.

Willow: (softly) “Get out.”

Amy picks the book up off the floor and leaves.

Willow stands with her eyes closed for a moment. When she opens them they’re back to normal.

Scene: The Magic Box. Day.

The magic box bell chimes as Willow marches through the door. Buffy, Faith and Giles are standing by the table, talking over a book. The others are seated, busy researching. Kennedy smiles and gets up. The others look at Willow as she stomps up to the table.

Buffy: “Hey! Any luck with the research?”

Willow: (as she passes her and Giles) “It’s Amy.”

Xander: “Amy cast the spell?”

Willow: (drawing level with Kennedy) “No but whatever did, whatever it is, she’s involved.”

Dawn: “Great. Ratgirl’s at it again.”

Kennedy: (angry)“Her? It’s her?”

Faith: “Did she say what it was?”

Buffy: “How did she get involved?”

Giles: “Does she know what cast the spell?”

Willow: (getting irritated) “I don’t know! I don’t…she says she doesn’t really know what she’s involved in. It’s just a new source of power. But she knew something about the watch, so I think she could be involved with Raven, at least a little.”

Buffy: “How much did she tell you?”

Willow: “Not much. (a little shamed) I tried to question her but… she made me angry. It was too soon after the spell… I lost it.”

Kennedy: “Did you hurt her?”

Willow shakes her head.

Kennedy: “Fine. Let me do it for you!” (starts to march out of the shop)

Everyone looks shocked. Giles, Buffy and Willow speak at the same time.

Giles: (outraged) “I beg your pardon!”

Buffy: “What? What are you saying?”

Willow: (grabbing Kennedy’s arm) “Kennedy! Stop!”

Kennedy: (shakes off Willow’s arm and rounds on her) “She dies, Willow! For this, she dies!”

Buffy: “In case you didn’t notice, we’re not in the business of slaying people.”

Kennedy: “How can you stand there and say that? You saw the spell! You saw what it did to her!”
Willow: “Kennedy, please! I’m okay!”

Kennedy: “No! She almost killed me last year, and now she’s sending powers to tear you up and bleed you out?”

Buffy: “Kennedy, we’re all angry at what’s happened, and we all want to kill the thing responsible. But Amy is human! We don’t kill humans!”

Willow bows her head, obviously ashamed. Buffy doesn’t notice. Xander does.

Kennedy: “She is not going to get away with this!”

Faith: (calmly) “No, she’s not.”

Kennedy and Buffy look at Faith.

Faith: “Look, this chick? This Amy girl? Don’t know her. Never met her. But she’s tried to kill you and now she’s hurt Willow. You’re upset. I get that. And she won’t get away with this. But killing her? Not helpful. Trust me.”

Kennedy: (shaking her head – refusing to listen) “No! We have to stop her! (turns to Buffy) Don’t you see? She won’t stop! She keeps hurting us and we keep letting her! Human or not, she’s a bad guy! (pulls away from Willow) And if you won’t take her down then I will!”

Kennedy starts walking out of the shop again.

Buffy: (lightly) “Fine! Kill her!”

Kennedy stops, and turns to look at Buffy again. She seems puzzled. Giles shoots Buffy a look. She puts her hand on his arm.

Buffy: “So shouldn’t you take a weapon?”

Kennedy hesitates.

Buffy: (crossing her arms, looks mock thoughtful) “What do you think? Stab her to death? Cut off her head? Maybe both? I think beheading myself. It’s messy, but stabbing doesn’t kill instantly. She might scream. You know, draw a crowd. You don’t want witnesses after all, do you?”

Kennedy looks crestfallen.

Faith: (in the same cheerful tone of voice) “So what will you do with the body?”

Kennedy: (confused) “The body?”

Faith: “Maybe you’re watcher never filled you in on the finer points of killing humans, but they don’t actually turn to dust when you kill them.”

Kennedy: (angry) “I know that!”

Buffy: “So? Body? What will you do? I’ve gotta tell ya, my back yard’s already full after last year. (turns to Faith) “Maybe a ditch somewhere?”

Faith: (nodding) “Sounds good. Since the river thing didn’t really work for me.”

Kennedy: “All right! I get the point you’re not so subtly making!”

Buffy: (severely) “I don’t think you do. But I want you to remember this much. Faith and I have both made mistakes in our past, plenty of them. (Faith looks a little surprised and pleased at the “both” but doesn’t say anything.) You should learn from us instead of repeating them.”

Kennedy bows her head and stands in the middle of the Magic Box., looking angry and upset. Willow goes to her and hugs her. Willow turns back to Buffy, still holding Kennedy.

Willow: “Someone should find her, find out what she knows. Someone who’s not me.”

Kennedy: (very quietly) “I think I should pass too.”

Buffy: “Giles and I’ll take the lead on the horsemen. (turns to Faith) Faith?”

Faith: “No problem boss, (to Willow) Library, right?”

Willow: “No, she left the library. I’ll do a locator spell.”

Buffy: “You sure you’re okay to…?”

Willow: “Yeah, I’ll be fine. (look crosses her face) No wait! If someone’s going to question Amy then I need to make a protection charm for them!”

Faith: “Sounds good to me. I kinda like snakes, but not when they’re smashing through my chest.”

Giles: “I agree. We should focus on the protection spell first. The locator spell can wait.”

Willow: (lets go of Kennedy, looks worried) “No, we can’t wait or she’ll… (suddenly brightens) Actually, Dawnie? You wanna do the locator spell?”

Dawn looks surprised, looks at Buffy.

Dawn: “Well sure, I mean… if it’s…”

Willow: (looking at Buffy) “If we wait to cast the locator spell then Amy might have a shield set up. She knows we’re on to her now. But if I cast the locator spell and then the protection charm she might move somewhere else and we won’t find her. “

Giles: (to Buffy) “I can watch over Dawn while she casts the spell.”

Buffy: (nods to Dawn) “It’s okay. (teasingly) Don’t break anything!”

Anya: “If you do it goes on the list”

Dawn gives Anya a look and then bobs her tongue out at Buffy. She goes off with Giles. Buffy turns to Faith.

Buffy: “ I don’t want anyone alone until we figure out what this new power is. Even us.”

Faith: “Agreed. (thinks for a second, Looks at Xander) “Yo, stud, up for some field work?”

It’s Xander’s turn to look surprised. He looks up from his books.

Faith: “If that’s okay with you?”

Xander: “Yeah, sure.”

Xander gets up from the table. Faith turns to Buffy.

Faith: “We’ll check back here at 10. If neither of us call…”

Buffy: (nodding) “We’ll assume the worst.”

Faith: (turns to Xander, grinning) “Looks like it’s just you and me, Harris.”

Xander: “Say, Faith, do you still get an ‘appetite’ after a kill?”

Faith “Let you know later, sweetcheeks”

Anya: (sniffs to herself) “Slut!”

After a few minutes Dawn comes over to them, very excited. She’s carrying a map.

Dawn: “It worked! It worked!”

Giles: “Ah yes. The unshakable confidence of the consummate professional.”

Dawn: “Sorry, it’s just – look! There she is!”

Buffy and Faith look at the map. Cut to Willow, who is sitting at the table, chanting over something with glows under her outspread hands. Kennedy and Xander are behind her, obviously concerned.

The glow fades. Willow smiles.

Willow: “There!”

We see the objects Willow was chanting over, two small leather pouches, each on a string. She picks one up and puts it around Xander’s neck, then steps back and smiles triumphantly.

Willow: “Safe as houses!”

Xander: “Would that be Buffy’s house? Because when you’ve spent a year or two fixing those windows it never seems quite so secure.”

Willow gives Xander a playful thump on the arm, then gives Faith her talisman. She puts it on herself. Faith smiles at Willow and turns to Xander.

Faith: “ C’mon Harris Let’s get going.”

Scene: Buffy’s house. Day.

Andrew: “How can you like Star Wars and not like Luke Skywalker?”

Spike: “Do me a favour, the git is wetter than a week old washrag!”

Andrew: “No he’s not! He’s brave and courageous (his mind starts to wander) and powerful and sweet and sensitive…”

Spike: “Oh don’t tell me you fancy him too!”

Pause

Andrew: (in a very defensive tone of voice) “…no…”

Clem: “I don’t know. I kinda like Luke.”

Spike: “He’s boring! All that whinging about Uncle Owen and the farm! Reminds me of that pillock Buffy used to date.”

Clem: (nodding wisely) “Aaah! You have farmboy issues!”

Andrew: “But in ‘Jedi’ he was all dark and had that dressed in black, blond look going on”. Looks at Spike and smiles.

Spike: “Er.. yeah. Well he was still trying to go all huggy with his Dad”

Andrew: “But that led to Anakin making the ultimate sacrifice and getting his redemption”

Spike: “A bit too bloody easy for my liking. Some of us had to have beetles crawling up their sodding noses before we even started”

Clem: munching on some crisps. “Hey, come on, at least we can agree on something”

(All together): “Bloody Ewoks”

Andew: “Oooh! Oooh quiet everybody! They are about to blow up the Death Star!

Spike and Clem exchange glances while Andrew sits enthralled.
