Subject: Episode 8.08 - "RIDING THE WAVE" by Sgt Rock (Part I)

1 EXT. SUNNYDALE ALLEY- NIGHT 1

ANGLE: RAVEN’S FEET

It’s raining. There are four unconscious bodies lying in an X on the floor and Raven is chanting an incantation from a scroll. The bodies are SARAH and MARTIN (who we saw in episode 6), as well as two new bodies DAVID and JAMES. David is a white male about 30 and James is a black male in his late twenties.

RAVEN
I call forth the power of the four, the servants of the end. Morbus, Bellari, Fames, Fera Regnare.

She moves into the centre of the bodies.

RAVEN
With my blood I summon thee; with my power I bind thee to my service. Morbus, Bellari, Fames, Fera Regnare.

She takes a knife from her belt and cuts her palm and places it on the ground. A light begins to grow from the concrete below her palm.

RAVEN
I beg for thy power, as an aid to my cause. Morbus, Bellari, Fames, Fera Regnare.

A bright yellow light shoots out from below her hand into the four bodies. We see Martin’s eyes. They open and glow black with a golden shine round the edge, then turns back to normal (CGI). Raven’s eyes roll up and she collapses to the floor.

FADE OUT

ANGLE: RAVEN’S POV AS SHE WAKES

FADE IN

The Four are awake. Martin is sitting on a dumpster, Sarah on his lap. They kiss passionately. James is up on the fire escape, looking over at the town. David is standing in the centre of the street drinking from the rain.

SARAH
(To the others)
She’s awake.

They all turn towards her.

JAMES
(To Raven)
You summoned us?

Raven stands up, smoothes down her hair and clothes.

RAVEN
I’ve got a job for you.

Opening credit sequence.

ACT I

2 EXT. SUNNYDALE ALLEY- NIGHT 2

Crane shot. Raven and The Four are still in the same positions as right before the opening credits. We can’t hear what’s being said. The camera pulls back and swings around to reveal the main Sunnydale high street. A lizard-demon runs out from one of the passages on the left, closely followed by BUFFY and FAITH. Faith has a curved blade weapon in hand, Buffy just has a stake. The demon runs over the right hand side of the street and jumps up and clings onto a shop wall. Buffy and Faith stop.

ANGLE: BUFFY AND FAITH

FAITH
Great, now what do we do?

Buffy throws the stake and it sticks into the centre of the demon’s back. It SCREAMS IN PAIN and falls off the wall. It turns to face Buffy and Faith, and a line of spikes grow from the top of its head to the base of its spine, pushing the stake out and falling onto the floor.

BUFFY
Okay, now that can’t be good.

Faith runs at the demon, but it jumps up and kicks her in the face sending her flying into a pool of water on the floor. It jumps for Buffy but she moves out the way and kicks it in between the legs. It falls to the floor in pain. Faith walks over, she’s very wet.

BUFFY
(to Faith)
Gotta love the male demons.

Faith smiles and uses the blade to cut off the demon’s head.

They both start getting their breath back when a RATTLING NOISE comes from the alley Raven is in, Faith SIGHS.

BUFFY
Stay here, I’ll check it out.

She heads over to the alley, the camera turns round to reveal the alley is now empty. A cat is trying to hide under some junk.

BUFFY
Cat.

ANGLE: High street.

FAITH
(tired)
Demon-cat?

Buffy walks off camera into the alley and comes back with a wet tabby.

FAITH
Aw, he’s cute.

She walks up to Buffy and the cat hisses at her.

FAITH
(acting tough)
Damn things probably diseased anyway.

BUFFY
(looking behind Faith)
Um, I don’t think he was hissing at you.

The demon head has sprouting a new body, and the demon body sprouting a new head. The two demons both stand up, looking angry.

Buffy puts the cat down.

BUFFY
It’s going to be a long night.

They both run towards the demons.

CUT TO:

3 INT. SUMMER'S HOME- MASTER BEDROOM- DAY 3

Morning light filters through the window. WILLOW and KENNEDY are sleeping peacefully in the bed. Kennedy wakes up and looks over at Willow and smiles. She leans over and kisses Willow on the forehead and climbs out of bed. Willow wakes and looks up at Kennedy.

WILLOW
Hey you.

Willow smiles.

KENNEDY
Good morning.

Kennedy smiles back.

WILLOW
What time is it?

Kennedy looks over at the clock.

CLOSE ON: CLOCK
It reads 11:34.

KENNEDY
Eleven thirty.

WILLOW
Oh God, I’m gonna be late. I can’t believe we slept so long.

Willow jumps out of bed and starts putting on clothes.

KENNEDY
Well we were up a lot of the night...

Willow laughs.

WILLOW
Don’t remind me.

Kennedy walks over to Willow, puts her arms around her and kisses her.

KENNEDY
You can remind me whenever you want...

Willow pushes her away.

WILLOW
(playfully)
Hey! Don’t tempt me, it’s important I go, I plan on actually finishing school one of these days. I can’t just sit around here all day doing nothing like some people.

Kennedy pouts.

KENNEDY
Hey! I’ve been looking for a job, but the only thing I’ve been offered is shifts at the Doublemeat, and I’m not that desperate.

WILLOW
You’ll find something. With your talent, who wouldn’t hire you?

KENNEDY
Well there’s the bank, the pet shop, that place in the mall...

Willow looks at her and she stops, Willow finishes getting dressed, checks herself in the mirror and heads for the door.

WILLOW
Don’t worry, you’ll find something. I’ll see you later when I get back. Don’t forget we offered to help Buffy clear out the attic.

She turns back into the room, and kisses Kennedy.

KENNEDY
I’ll be here.

WILLOW
Bye.

Willow leaves the room, leaving Kennedy on her own.

WILLOW (O.C)
Hi guys... Bye guys.

We hear the front door open, and then close a few moments later. Kennedy sighs downheartedly and sits down in front of the mirror.

CUT TO:

4 INT. SUMMER'S HOME- LOUNGE- DAY 4

XANDER and CLEM sit on either end of the big couch watching TV; SPIKE walks in, drops his blanket and sits in the armchair.

SPIKE
Hey.

XANDER
(Never looks away from TV)
Hmm.

CLEM
(looks over)
Hey Spike.

SPIKE
So... anything good on?

Spike looks at the TV.

CLOSE ON: TV
Bert and Ernie are singing a song in their living room.

SPIKE
Bert and Ernie? An overweight builder and a demon come to the slayer’s house to watch pre-school television? No wonder you guys are both single.

XANDER
Hey! One, I’m not overweight (beat) anymore, and two, we’re not the ones who picked the channel.

Xander looks towards the doorway and ANDREW walks in and sits in between Xander and Clem.

ANDREW
You know, I always thought it was nice to see two guys living together without... oh, hi Spike.

SPIKE
(rolls his eyes)
Figures. Buffy at work?

XANDER
Nope, she called in sick. Her and Faith were up all night demon fighting.

SPIKE
(concerned) She alright? (annoyed) Why didn’t she call me if she was in trouble?

XANDER
Maybe she thought it was too much for you.

Spike is annoyed by the comment, Xander notices.

XANDER
It wasn’t that bad. She’ll be fine, she just needs some rest. She’s asleep upstairs.

SPIKE
(glances up the stars)
Oh, maybe I should just...

XANDER
(firmly)
No visitors allowed.

SPIKE
Right. Well, as much as I hate to miss the adventures of rubber ducky, I’m gonna go do some training down in the basement.

He stands up and goes to leave.

CLEM
Oh hey, are we still on for the big card game tonight?

SPIKE
Yeah, sure.

XANDER
We playing at the bar?

SPIKE
Willy’s.

XANDER
How come?

SPIKE
Joe got eaten by a krevlok demon. Place’s been closed since. Don’t forget to bring your wallets with you.

CLEM
I still say it’s better when we play for kittens.

ANDREW
No kittens! What are you, some kind of monster?

Everyone stares at Andrew.

ANDREW
Oh right, obviously.

CUT TO:

5 EXT. RAVEN’S HIDEOUT- DAY 5

Raven and The Four approach her hideout at the back of the graveyard, trees line the path along the left hand side. Whilst Raven is walking slightly ahead, she looks uncomfortable and out of place. She turns to talk to them.

RAVEN
Where are your horses?

JAMES
What?

RAVEN
I was under the impression that the four horsemen would have, you know, horses?

MARTIN
(to Raven)
Where’s your coffin?

RAVEN
That’s popular myth. We don’t sleep in coffins.

MARTIN
Exactly. It’s like a game of Chinese whispers, the truth you start with hardly ever reflects the fiction at the end.

JAMES
(laughs)
My god, can you believe the stupidity of this chick?

RAVEN
(annoyed)
I was also under the impression that you’d have powers, but I’ve seen little in the way of proof.

James walks towards her, although she’s not scared she backs up until she’s up against one of the trees. He slams his hand against the tree above her shoulder.

RAVEN
Is that supposed to scare...

James smiles and Raven turns to see the tree is dying, spreading outward from his hand (CGI).

JAMES
That enough power for you?

CUT TO:

6 INT. SUMMER’S HOUSE- BUFFY’S BEDROOM- DAY 6

Buffy is sleeping in bed. There’s a KNOCK on the door and Buffy wakes up, Willow walks in.

WILLOW
(quietly)
Hey.

BUFFY
Hey Will, what time is it?

Buffy sits up.

WILLOW
Four.

BUFFY
Oh God, I slept all day. How’s Faith? How’s school?

WILLOW
Kennedy spent the night here, so we haven’t heard anything from Faith, and Professor Kent said I have one more chance. Even their best student can only come back so many times.

BUFFY
Things seem to be going well between the two of you.

Willow looks confused, she thinks Buffy means her and Kent.

BUFFY
You and Kennedy.

WILLOW
Oh, yeah, we’re taking it slowly but it’s nice. It’s different, and it still feels kinda new. But I think we’re happy.

BUFFY
I’m glad. (beat) Any news on everyone favourite vampire?

WILLOW
Nope, we’re all quiet on the vampire front.

BUFFY
Well I for one am glad. Means we have some time to...

WILLOW
Tidy the attic?

BUFFY
(disheartened)
That’s today?

WILLOW
Yup.

BUFFY
Is it a bad to want a demon attack now?

WILLOW
(playing along)
Never one when you want one is there.

BUFFY
(resigned)
We better make a start, is everyone here?

WILLOW
Giles said he couldn’t make it, house hunting, Dawn went with him.

BUFFY
Those two seem to be getting close?

WILLOW
Giles and Dawn? I guess he’s the closest thing she’s really got to a father.

BUFFY
Yeah, dad seems to have even given up calling her now. And you know how Dawn feels about family.

Buffy gets out of bed and heads to the door.

WILLOW
Um, Buffy?

BUFFY
Yeah Will?

WILLOW
You might want to get changed before we start cleaning the attic.

Buffy looks down, she’s still wearing pyjamas.

BUFFY
Right... I’ll be there in a minute.

WILLOW
Yeah.

Willow walks out and closes the door behind her.

CUT TO:

7 INT. SUMMER’S HOUSE- ATTIC- DAY 7

Buffy, Willow, Anya, Kennedy, Xander and Andrew are seen sorting through boxes in the attic.

Kennedy pulls out the pieces of a broken sword from one of the boxes.

KENNEDY
How can one slayer accumulate so much junk?

Kennedy throws it back in the box.

BUFFY
This isn’t junk, there’s my mom’s, stuff and Dawn’s, things and...

Buffy picks up a leg from the BuffyBot.

BUFFY
... Why do we still have this?

ANDREW
Whoa, Slayer’s have detachable legs? Just like Jaime Sommers in the Bionic Woman.

XANDER
It’s from Warren’s BuffyBot. (then as an afterthought) Lindsay Wagner was hot.

He reaches into a box and pulls out the Sid puppet from episode The Puppet Show.

XANDER
Look at this, (as Sid) Redrum! Redrum!

WILLOW
Xander!

XANDER
What? It’s not like he’s still possessed with the spirit of a dead demon hunter... (worried) right?

Willow rolls her eyes; Xander carefully puts the puppet back into the box.

Willow opens the box in front of her and pulls out her bridesmaid’s dress from Hell’s Bells.

WILLOW
Eugh.

ANYA
(referring to Willow’s comment)
What was that?

WILLOW
(quickly)
Nothing.

Willow hides the dress back in the box and moves it to one side. She stops in her tracks.

Willow moves some things out the way to reveal the box labelled TARA. Willow pulls the box out and starts moves to take it downstairs.

KENNEDY
Where you going Will?

WILLOW
There’s just some stuff here I want to sort through in the light.

KENNEDY
(not realizing what’s in the box)
Okay.

CUT TO:

8 INT. SUMMER’S HOUSE- MASTER BEDROOM- DAY 8

Willow walks into the bedroom and closes the door behind her. She places the box down on the floor by the bed, sits down and opens the box.

She pulls out one of Tara’s dresses and places it on the bed, followed by other random Wiccan objects. At the bottom of the box is a leather covered book, with the world Maclay written on the front. A largish stone is bound to the front with a leather strap. She undoes the tie and places the stone behind her on the bed.

Willow opens to a random page near the start.

WILLOW
(reading)
Emily Maclay. October twelfth, 1946...

She skips about halfway through the book and starts reading again.

WILLOW
Tara Maclay, August seventeenth, 1995. I’m not really sure what I’m meant to write here, the world of...

TARA (V.O)
... magic has never kept secret from me but until a few days ago I didn’t even know my mom was a witch. Now she seems to think it’s important that I learn everything. She gave me this book and told me to keep it safe.

FADE TO:

9 INT. MACLAY HOUSE- TARA’S BEDROOM- NIGHT 9

The curtains are closed, a young Tara (about 14) is writing in the book on her bed.

TARA (V.O)
(continued)
She said she wouldn’t always be around, and I have to learn to protect myself. She said there were things in this world I’m not ready to face... I’m not really sure what she meant.

The room changes (posters etc) as we skip a year forward to see a year older Tara (same actress) lying in the same position on the bed. The door to her room is locked.

TARA (V.O)
I created my first potion today, mom guided me through it, it blew up a couple of times but I got it right in the end and...

We hear a LOUD BANGING at the door

MR. MACLAY (O.C)
(from outside the room)
What are you doing in there?

Young Tara quickly ties the strap on the book placing the stone back into place and hides it in a box under her bed.

MR. MACLAY (O.C)
Tara! Open this door right now!

Tara runs over to the door and unlocks it. Mr. Maclay pushes the door open and Tara jumps to get out of the way.

MR. MACLAY
(angrily)
What are you doing in here?

CUT TO:

10 INT. SUMMER’S HOUSE- MASTER BEDROOM- DAY 10

ANGLE: WILLOW

WILLOW
What?

The door is now open and Kennedy is leaning on the doorframe.

KENNEDY
(curious)
What are you doing in here?

WILLOW
(trying to act inconspicuously)
Oh, nothing. I just found some stuff I wanted to sort through in the light.

Willow ties the book back up without the stone and places it in the box, Kennedy notices but doesn’t really pay any attention.

KENNEDY
Well if you’re finished here, there’s some stuff of yours we need you to check out.

Willow smiles.

WILLOW
Just give me a sec to put all this back.

KENNEDY
Okay.

Kennedy turns and leaves the room.

Willow places all Tara’s stuff back in the box, but forgets about the stone behind her. She hides the box in the closet, locks the door and leaves the room.

ANGLE: THE STONE ON THE BED

The stone glows black then gold, similar to the eyes of The Four, and then returns to normal (CGI).

END OF ACT 1

ACT 2

11 INT. RAVEN’S HIDEOUT- DAY 11

Martin, Sarah and James sit around the place looking bored, David appears to be meditating in a corner, Raven wanders around talking to them.

RAVEN
So I’m just doing what I’m here for right? Trying to do my job, and keep out of everyone way? But the slayer keeps...

JAMES
Look, you’ve told us about the damn slayer a hundred times already, and as we’ve said, we don’t care. She’s your problem, not ours. We’re not here to fight for you. Now, while I accept it’s possible that somewhere in the translation of the ancient texts they forgot to mention we were only to be brought forth to bring about the apocalypse, scorch the earth, that kinda thing. I don’t think it would have mentioned anywhere we were godamn doormen! (pause) And if that’s not bad enough, you don’t even have the stones waiting for us, without which we are rendered virtually powerless!

He sighs.

RAVEN
Do I look like I care what you’re supposed to be summoned for? All I know is you have the power to open the hellmouth, and seeing as how it was my power that summoned you, you pretty much have to do what I say.

David opens his eyes and looks toward Raven.

DAVID
No, we don’t. You get to charge us with one task, that’s the extent of your power over us. How we accomplish that task, and who we call in to aid us...

There is a LOUD BANGING at the door, and a giant snarling dog-like creature (not a demon-dog) bursts through. It looks like it’s about to attack everyone, but sees David and goes and lies down beside him.

DAVID
... Is really up to us.

David starts petting the dog-demon.

RAVEN
(unfazed)

About the power stones thing, I didn’t even know you’d need them. I thought you were all-powerful, those old prophecies really talk you guys up a lot.

James glares at her.

MARTIN
We can sense them. One’s already on the hellmouth, we can find the others given time.

RAVEN
How much time?

JAMES
It takes as long as it takes. Jeez, didn’t your watcher teach you patience?

In the blink of an eye Raven has James by the throat up and lifts him up against the wall. There is no reaction from the other three.

RAVEN
(angrily)
You do not get to talk about my watcher.

JAMES
(gasping for breath)
Ooh, psychotic vampire. So scary.

RAVEN
(to others)
Do I really need all four of you?

MARTIN
No, but you need all four powers. If you want to open the hellmouth, you gotta have four vessels.

RAVEN
Then I’ll get another vessel.

Raven’s hand jerks and we hear a CRACK as his spine snaps. She drops him to the floor and he falls into a heap. She turns around to face the others and smiles. They all smile back.

CUT TO:

12 INT. SUMMER’S HOUSE- UPSTAIRS HALLWAY-DAY 12

Anya, Andrew and Xander stand at the bottom of the ladder as Buffy climbs down. Anya is holding a glass ball and Andrew is holding Mr. Gordo

ANYA
I can’t believe you had an orb of Tiamat in your attic.

BUFFY
It’s probably Giles’. He used to bring over all kinds of magic junk back in the days of tweed.

ANYA
Well that’s good.

BUFFY
Yeah, one less thing to keep in the house.

ANYA
No I meant if it’s Giles’ then I can sell it at the magic box. Tiamat’s orbs are very rare.

BUFFY
(sarcastically)
I’m so glad you can ignore Giles’ ownership right for financial gain.

ANYA
(excited, not getting the sarcasm)
I know!

CUT TO:

13 INT. RAVEN’S HIDEOUT- DAY 13

Same positions we left them in.

JAMES
Ow.

James stands up and snaps his head back. Raven is shocked.

RAVEN
What the...

JAMES
We hold apocalyptic power of biblical proportions, you really think we can be killed so easily?

RAVEN
I thought you were still human?

DAVID
We’re more human than you... For now at least.

RAVEN
But when you get your stones...

SARAH
Humanity would be... an annoyance.

RAVEN
Let me guess, you want me to get them right?

JAMES
Like we’d trust you to do anything so important.

Raven looks to be getting angry with James again.

RAVEN
Look...

MARTIN
We’ll get them. Besides they’re in a house, so you couldn’t get them if you tried.

JAMES
(to Raven, sarcastically)
Let’s ride.

CUT TO:

14 INT. SUMMER’S HOUSE- MASTER BEDROOM- DAY 14

Willow walks in, checks no-one is watching and locks the door (if there’s a lock on the door?) behind her. She sees the stone on the bed and picks it up, placing it on the dresser. She goes over to the closet and opens it. Searching through the box she finds the book again and lies on the bed and starts reading.

TARA (V.O)
I’ve been practicing for three years now. I feel like I’ll never be as powerful as mom was. Sometimes I just wish there was a way I could speed things up, be more powerful.

FADE TO:

15 INT. MACLAY HOUSE- TARA’S BEDROOM- NIGHT 15

Tara is now about 17 y/o.

TARA (V.O)
(continued)
I know there was more mom wanted to teach me before she died. Something about this stone. I think it’s some sort of receptacle for power. I’ve read all of my Grandmother’s entries about it, but most are in languages I can’t even begin to understand. I’m going to have to try and find out on my own.

The room changes but Tara stays the same age.

TARA (V.O)
I understand why power is so dangerous now. I tried to harness the power of the stone and things... T-t-they didn’t exactly work out as planned. I forgot how powerful magic can be, I won’t be make that mistake again. But at least dad knows I’m practicing now, even i-i-if the circumstances weren’t the best for him to find out. He told me some things, things about me that... (pause) The stone holds more power than I could have imagined. I won’t be using it or anything that powerful again. Magic is dangerous and needs to be treated with respect.

WIPE TO:

16 INT. SUMMER’S HOUSE- BASEMENT- DAY 16

Spike is using a punching bag, much more equipment is lying round the basement. He’s been here all day. Buffy comes down the stairs.

BUFFY
(joking)
I hope you’re going to clear all this up afterwards.

SPIKE
(concerned)
Buffy, (beat) you okay? Xander said you weren’t feeling too good.

BUFFY
I’m fine. Well, nothing a little rest didn’t fix anyway. You been here all day?

SPIKE
Yeah, sun was up. While my tan could probably use a little work, I’d rather be a pale man than a tanned pile of ash.

Buffy smiles.

BUFFY
You know you missed out on the big clean up.

SPIKE
Somehow rooting through boxes of crosses and holy water just didn’t seem like as much fun as...

BUFFY
Pounding away on a punching bag for five hours?

SPIKE
(smiles)
Something like that.

A crash comes from upstairs and we hear Anya scream. Both Buffy and Spike jump up and rush up the stairs.
