Subject: Episode 8.08 - "RIDING THE WAVE" by Sgt Rock (Part II)

17. INT. SUMMER’S HOUSE- LOUNGE- DAY 17

Buffy and Spike run into the lounge to see the window is broken and the room is a mess. The giant dog-creature is in the middle of the room, Kennedy and Xander against the wall. Xander is keeping the dog away with a mace and Andrew lies on the floor next to the television, unconscious.

BUFFY
(whispers to Spike)
Get to the weapons box. I’ll distract it.

Spike nods.

BUFFY
(to the dog)
Hey fido!

The dog turns around and leaps at Buffy pinning her down. Spike runs to the weapons chest and pulls out an axe. He jumps at the dog but it kicks him aside without a second glance. Willow runs down the stairs and holds up her hand.

WILLOW
Attollere! (Translation: Elevate)

A magic energy ball flies from her hand and the dog is flung across the room. Spike gets up and starts swinging at the dog and Buffy jumps onto its back and tries to break its neck. BREAKING GLASS is heard from upstairs and the dog stops fighting and shrugs both Buffy and Spike off, its eyes glow black then gold (CGI) and leaps out the window and runs off down the street.

Andrew wakes up in the corner.

ANDREW
Did we win?

BUFFY
No, (beat) yes (beat) maybe. What happened to Anya, where is she?

XANDER
It’s ok, she left just before that thing attacked. What was that?

SPIKE
It’s a sant’cha demon. Usually hang around forests, feed off the wildlife. I’ve never heard of them coming into towns before.

ANDREW
Spike’s right. I tried to summon one once, (gravely) it didn’t end well.

KENNEDY
(Concerned)
Why, what happened?

ANDREW
(looking like he’s about to break down)
I couldn’t control it and... it tore up my copy of Vampirella number one-thirteen.

BUFFY
(ignoring Andrew)
What did it want here? This can’t have been a random attack, it’s too much of a coincidence.

SPIKE
Raven?

BUFFY
Maybe. It seemed to run away when...

WILLOW
The upstairs window.

She rushes upstairs.

CUT TO:

18. INT. SUMMER’S HOUSE- MASTER BEDROOM- DAY 18

The door bursts open and Willow, Xander, Kennedy and Buffy walk in. The window is broken but apart from that everything looks fine.

KENNEDY
Everything’s where we left it this morning, nothings been taken.

WILLOW
No, they got something.

KENNEDY
What?

WILLOW
When we were up in the attic I found a box of Tara’s things, her book of shadows was in there. It’s gone.

KENNEDY
(hurt)
Is that what you were looking at when I came in here earlier? Why didn’t you tell me you’d found that?

WILLOW
It was something I wanted to see alone, I didn’t want you to feel bad or jealous or something. I thought it would be better if I just kept it a secret.

KENNEDY
You know I understand about you and Tara, I would never want you to forget about her. But it hurts that you didn’t trust me enough to think I could handle it.

WILLOW
I do trust you, you know I do it’s just...

KENNEDY
It’s just that you don’t want to move on, we’ve been together almost a year and your still holding back. Your old relationship with Tara means more to you than we do. Don’t dwell on the past Will, otherwise you’re gonna miss out on the present.

Kennedy storms out.

WILLOW
(calling after her)
Kennedy!

Willow goes to follow her.

BUFFY
Will, wait. We need to know what was in that book.

WILLOW
There was nothing really, it was like a diary.

BUFFY
There must have been something else, a spell or a potion or...

WILLOW
There were some spells and potions but, (pause) the stone, o-on the front it was powerful, Tara wrote about it. It could have been that.

BUFFY
Right.

WILLOW
I’ve got to catch up with Kennedy, explain things...

XANDER
Not a good idea. Let her calm down, talk to her later.

BUFFY
Xander’s right. It’ll be okay, she’ll be back. But right now we need to know who took that stone.

XANDER
We aren’t thinking Raven here?

BUFFY
Whoever it was got into the house uninvited, and unless the rules have changed, Raven’s not getting in.

XANDER
You want me to phone Giles?

BUFFY
Yeah, get him here. Call Faith too, we might need her.

XANDER
Right.

He goes down the stairs.

BUFFY
(to Willow)
You gonna be okay?

WILLOW
(forced smile)
I’ll be fine.

ESTABLISHING SHOT: EXT. SUNNYDALE HOUSE- FRONT YARD- DAY

CUT TO:

19 INT. SUNNYDALE HOUSE- LIVING ROOM- DAY 19

GILES is in the corner talking to a salesman; DAWN is wandering around the room looking bored.

DAWN
(to herself)
Should have stayed and cleaned up the attic.

Suddenly her cell-phone begins to ring. She answers it.

DAWN
(into phone)
Hello?
(pause)
Hey Andrew, what’s up?
(pause)
Is everyone okay, what happened?
(pause)
We’ll be right there.

DAWN
(to Giles)
Um, Giles? There’s a problem with the... dog.

GILES
(confused)
The dog?

DAWN
(emphatically)
Yes, the dog. He got into the house.

GILES
(getting it)

Oh. Um, right.

GILES
(to the salesman)
There’s a problem with... our dog. The house is great, I’ll call about another look.

They leave in a hurry.

END OF ACT 2

ACT 3

20 INT. MAGIC BOX- DAY 20

Dawn, Buffy, Willow and Xander are sitting at the table, Anya is looking through one of the bookcases. Giles walks over and hands an open book to Buffy. The book has a drawing of the Sant’cha demon on the open page. It’s all in black and white except for the eyes which are a coloured a deep blue.

GILES
Is this it?

BUFFY
That’s poochie.

GILES
Spike was right about it being a Sant’cha demon. Very rare, never seen in crowded places.

BUFFY
So what was this demon doing here?

GILES
Well if I didn’t know any better I’d say this Sant’cha was being controlled by something.

BUFFY
What do you mean?

The bell on the door rings and Faith walks in.

FAITH
Hey guys, what did I miss?

BUFFY
We got attacked by a Santa demon.

FAITH
Santa demon? Kennedy said something about a dog demon...

WILLOW
(hopeful)
Is she with you?

FAITH
No, she locked herself in her room, she seemed really upset.

Willow looks down-heartened.

GILES
As I was saying, most ordinary demons can be controlled by a powerful enough master, but the Sant’cha are different. They don’t have a mind as such, they work purely off of instinct, and so controlling it using normal methods would be impossible.

BUFFY
Plus, who’d want to, ugly critter. Eyes are quite pretty though. Not like the one that attacked us.

Giles takes back the book.

GILES
What do you mean?

BUFFY
This one has blue eyes, the one that attacked us had black and gold eyes.

GILES
That’s not possible.

BUFFY
Why?

GILES
Male Sant’cha all have blue eyes, females have green, it’s all to do with mating.

ANYA
(turns from what she’s doing)
What did you say?

XANDER
He said mating.
(to the others)
She’s obsessed.

ANYA
Not about that, about the eyes.

BUFFY
They were black, gold outline.

ANYA
Oh no.

She looks around the bookshelf and pulls out a black leather bound book. She flicks through the pages and hands it to Giles.

GILES
Oh dear.

XANDER
Anyone else hate it when he says that?

Giles flicks a few pages and places the book down on the table.

BUFFY
Oh god.

The camera pans to show what’s in the book, it’s five men riding on the back of dragons.

XANDER
Wait, so we’ve got to fight the Nazgul now? Where’s the sword of kings when you need one?

Giles rolls his eyes and flicks a couple of pages.

GILES
Actually what we might be fighting is this:

He stops flicking pages and reveals a picture of the biblical four horsemen of the apocalypse, riding out to the world.

GILES
They’re best known as the four horsemen of the apocalypse. But the story goes all the way back to Babylonian time, when they were seven Sebitti, summoned by the powerful god Anu. You’ve seen the picture with five of them. They were last summoned as a four about a century ago, in the small town of Yavanna, a powerful witch managed to stop them by banishing their powers into four mystic stones.

WILLOW
What happened?

GILES
The power was too much for one person to control. Before it could all be placed in the stones, it overwhelmed her. The town was destroyed, along with the horsemen. The witch died two days later.

WILLOW
Destroyed?

GILES
Everything, people, buildings, roads. All gone, not even any wreckage.

XANDER
Wow.

BUFFY
If all the power wasn’t put into these stones, what happened to it?

GILES
We can’t be sure, but most likely it sank into the earth. The only way they could be back is if the remaining power was funnelled into living vessels.

BUFFY
Living vessels, you mean...

GILES
Humans. And while most of their power would still be locked in the stones, they’re still going to be immensely powerful.

BUFFY
And we’re guessing the stone they took from the house, is one of these power stones?

WILLOW
It would make sense, Tara wrote that she tried to tap its power once, I don’t know what happened, but it didn’t sound good.

GILES
And if Tara could tap the power, it’s not going to be long before they find a way to do the same.

BUFFY
So where are the others?

GILES
There’s no reference to them after the town is destroyed, presumably they’re still around somewhere.

BUFFY
And what about Raven? Do we think she’s connected to this?

GILES
It would make sense, with the powers separated, it would take someone of tremendous power to raise them again. The combined power of vampire and slayer would seem to fit the bill.

BUFFY
Well we’ve got a few hours till sunset. Me and Faith will go patrol the streets, Xander you try demon hangouts, see if you can find anything out. Willow, I want you and Dawn to head back to the house. Tell Spike to find us as soon as the sun’s down.

GILES
I’ll see if I can’t find anything else about banishing the horsemen that won’t kill the one who does it.

Everyone nods and heads on their way.

CUT TO:

21 INT. WILLY’S BAR- BACK ROOM- DUSK 21

Xander walks in, Clem’s there setting up a poker table.

CLEM
Hey Xander, you’re early, I was just setting up.

He lifts a bowl of snacks off the table and offers one to Xander.

CLEM
Chip?

Xander shakes his head and notices something behind the table, the camera pans around to reveal a basket of kittens on the floor. Xander looks at Clem.

CLEM
In case you change your mind.

XANDER
Game’s off Clem. We got trouble, what do you know about the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse?

CLEM
They ride horses? Sorry, I tend not to hang out with the um, bad element. Willy’s in the bar though, he might have heard something.

XANDER
Thanks. We’ll reorganise the game though yeah?

CLEM
Yeah.

Xander leaves through the door into the bar, Clem looks down at the kittens. One of them is trying to climb out of the basket. Clem drops down and picks it up

CLEM
(smiles)
Well aren’t you sweet. I could just eat you right up!

He pauses, having an idea. Then quickly starts to pack everything away.

CUT TO:

22 INT. WILLY’S BAR- DUSK 23

Xander walks through the door into the bar. WILLY is organising a work crew on one side of the bar. Xander walks over to Willy.

XANDER
Willy.

WILLY
Hey kid, long time no see. What’s up?

XANDER
What’s going on?

WILLY
This? (indicating building work) Some hot shot karaoke demon in LA got his place blown up while ago, a lot of demons still looking for a place to sing.

XANDER
So you’re adding a karaoke stage to the bar?

WILLY
Yeah, why? You think it’s a bad idea?

XANDER
I just think this town’s got enough demons without inviting more in. Especially the kind that want to sing karaoke. Don’t they remember the good old days of sitting in a dark corner plotting to kill the slayer?

WILLY
They’re not so bad, you just got to know how to treat ‘em. So what you want? I’m guessing you’re not here for some O-neg.

XANDER
I need some information, the four horsemen of the apocalypse. What do you know?

WILLY
Bible story, rain of fire, destroying the world.

XANDER
And?

WILLY
That’s it, why? You heard something?

XANDER
Nothing for you to know. What about Raven? Heard of her?

Willy reacts to this, but tries not to let on.

WILLY
Erm, I’m not really much of a bird watcher you know.

Xander takes out his wallet and pulls out a wad of cash, handing it to Willy he puts it into pocket.

WILLY
Her and a bunch of newcomers are in the graveyard.

XANDER
Which one?

WILLY
Don’t know.

XANDER
Well you’ve been a whole lot of help.

WILLY
Hey, that could be my new motto. I could have it as a sign behind the bar “Willy – he’s a whole lot of help.”

Xander ignores this and walks over to the bar and gets his cell-phone out. He dials a number and lifts it to his ear.

XANDER
Hey Buffy.
(pause)
Yeah, she’s in the graveyard.
(pause)
Don’t know, you’ll just have to search around.
(pause)
You want me to come help?
(pause)
Okay, see you later.

He sees Clem leaving and walks toward him.

XANDER
Hey Clem, wait up!

CUT TO:

23 EXT. SUNNYDALE GRAVEYARD- NIGHT 23

Buffy and Faith are walking through the graveyard. They’ve been searching for a long time.

FAITH
Nineteen graveyards in this town. Does no-one get cremated any more?

Buffy motions as if she heard something.

BUFFY
What was that?

FAITH
What?

BUFFY
I heard something.

FAITH
You’re trippin’. I didn’t hear anything.

BUFFY
There it is again.

Buffy pulls out her stake, Faith grabs the blade we saw her with in the teaser.

They move back-to-back, ready to fight. Faith spins her arm round and it’s caught by Spike right at his throat. Both Buffy and Faith breath a sigh of relief, and put their weapons away.

FAITH
Hey there soul boy, we thought you might actually be something scary.

Spike is obviously annoyed at the comment, but ignores it and turns to Buffy.

SPIKE
Hey, Willow told me you might need some help.

They walk around a group of dead trees and come upon Raven’s hideout. The Sant’cha demon is patrolling out front.

BUFFY
We’re gonna have to take out Santa before we can get in there.

Spike looks confused but doesn’t question it.

BUFFY
We go at it from three sides, try and confuse it. Spike, make your way down there (she indicates to the trees), Faith you go down the right and come at it from there. Ready?

Both Faith and Spike nod.

BUFFY
Ok, don’t go until I give you a signal.

They sneak around each side, Buffy pulls a crossbow from off her back. She waits until Spike and Faith are in position and fires at it. The arrow sticks in its side but it barely registers on the demon. It notices Buffy though and begins to run at her.

Both Spike and Faith move in from the sides and jump at the demon, holding it down. Buffy runs up but it jumps and pushes them all off. The Sant’cha howls and Raven comes out the front and sees what’s going on.

RAVEN
What the hell is going on out... You. (indicates Buffy)

She jumps in and starts fighting Buffy. In the mean time Spike has got up and started fighting with the Sant’cha again.

Faith runs over and starts fighting with Buffy against Raven. Buffy backs off and Faith gets the message, backing off too.

BUFFY
(to Faith)
Get inside, try and find the stone, we’ll take care of everything out here.

FAITH
You sure? Your boy doesn’t seem to be doing too well.

BUFFY
(she glances at Spike, who appears to be losing)
Yeah, but be quick.

Faith runs into the building while Buffy and Spike continue fighting.

CUT TO:

24 INT. RAVEN’S HIDEOUT 24

The hideout is empty. In the centre lies the stone on a podium, and Tara’s book of shadows is underneath it. Faith looks confused at the lack of resistance but walks up and carefully picks up the stone and the book. Checking everything she quickly walks out of the building. The Four appear from out of the shadows. Martin is holding the true stone, the one Faith picked up was a fake.

DAVID
Well that was easy.

CUT TO:

25 EXT. SUNNYDALE GRAVEYARD- NIGHT. 25

Spike is pinned down by the Sant’cha, Buffy and Raven seem pretty even, but Buffy looks the more beat up. Faith runs over to help Buffy.

Spike looks like he’s about to be eaten, but suddenly morphs into vamp face and pushes the demon off him.

SPIKE
Now that’s more like it.

He leaps at the demon and pulls the crossbow bolt that Buffy fired out of its hide. The demon pounces at Spike again but he stabs it in the eye when it reaches him. The demon howls in pain and Spike kicks the bolt all the way into its head.

After making sure the demon’s really dead, Spike also comes over to fight Raven. Seeing how outnumbered she is, she knocks them all down and runs at combined vamp/slayer speed out of sight in seconds.

BUFFY
Did you get it?

Faith holds up the stone.

BUFFY
No problems in there?

FAITH
Plain sailing.

BUFFY
Lets get this baby back to Giles.

CUT TO:

26 INT. MAGIC BOX- NIGHT 26

Buffy, Faith, and Spike sit around the table.

FAITH
Fake? You sure?

The camera pulls back to reveal Giles

GILES
Positive, there’s no magic in here at all.

FAITH
So where’s the original?

GILES
One would assume it’s still with The Four.

BUFFY
Which means we failed.

GILES
Not completely. It seems the witch who vanquished them before was one of Tara’s ancestors. The book Willow provided gave us some useful information. Or at least it will, once I’ve translated it.

BUFFY
(looking around)
Where is it?

GILES
I copied the pages I needed and gave it back to Willow. There’s nothing more we can do tonight. We’ll regroup tomorrow and have another look at things.

BUFFY
Spike, you wanna come back and beat up the punching bag some more?

SPIKE
(smiles)
Thanks luv, that dog was just the bout of violence I needed.

He gets up to go.

FAITH
See ya soul boy.

Spike lets it go.

CUT TO:

27 EXT. SUNNYDALE ALLEY- NIGHT 27

Raven looks tired, The Four walk up to her looking happy.

RAVEN
What the hell happened to you guys? You couldn’t try and stop the slayer?

SARAH
Why? She didn’t get anything important.

RAVEN
Slayers – good guys, Us – bad guys.

JAMES
You’re a slayer.

RAVEN
You’re annoying.

MARTIN
Children! Don’t make me separate you two.

RAVEN
Why didn’t you try and stop her?

MARTIN
We’ve told you before, the slayers are your problem. We’ll do our job when we’re ready.

RAVEN
And when exactly is that?

MARTIN
Soon. There are still three stones out there, and they’re not in Sunnydale. We’re going to head out and find them.

RAVEN
Out of Sunnydale?

JAMES
(sarcastically)
No, just out of the alley. They’re in the middle of the street, go take a look.

Raven growls.

MARTIN
(calming the situation)
We’ll be back soon. We might need your help in getting some of them though.

RAVEN
Well don’t take too long. We’re on a schedule here.

They start to walk out the alley, Raven pulls a knife out and throws it into James’ back, directly in the heart. He falls to his knees.

RAVEN
That kill him?

DAVID
No.

RAVEN
Damn.

James pulls out the knife, stands up and throws it back at Raven who catches it. As they walk off Raven looks at the blood covered knife. She runs her finger along the blade collecting the blood and licks it off. It’s obviously more powerful than normal human blood.

RAVEN
Girl could get used to this.

CUT TO:

28 INT. SUMMER’S HOUSE- WILLOW’S ROOM- NIGHT 28

Willow’s lying on the bed reading from the book of shadows, she finishes and looks up, she’s made a decision. She walks out of her room and over to Dawn’s door and knocks.

CUT TO:

29 INT. SUMMER’S HOUSE- DAWN’S ROOM- NIGHT 29

Dawn is lying on the bed, Willow knocks on the door and walks in with the Book of Shadows.

WILLOW
Hey Dawnie. You got a minute?

DAWN
Sure, come in.

Willow sits on the bed.

WILLOW
Before Tara died, she kept a book of shadows. It’s like a diary, but for a witch. Tara’s great-grandmother started it, she gave it to her daughter just before she died. Then she, not having a daughter of her own, she gave it to her daughter-in-law, Tara’s mother. And before she died she passed it onto Tara. It’s a family tradition I think we should honour.

DAWN
What do you mean?

WILLOW
I think Tara would have liked you to have it.

She passes the book to Dawn.

WILLOW
There’s some spells and potions in there too, and if you want to try any of them, go ahead. But let me watch while you do, yeah? We don’t want you going all veiny on us now do we?

DAWN
Thank you, this is... Thank you.

WILLOW
Don’t thank me, it was never really mine in the first place.

Dawn smiles and Willow leaves the room, closing the door behind her. Dawn opens the book and flicks through the pages until she finds the last entry.

As Tara talks we see Willow getting ready to go out to talk to Kennedy.

TARA (V.O)
Every moment is precious. Life goes on whether we want it to or not, and if we dwell on our mistakes we can never fully appreciate what’s important. Our friends and our family. The ones we love. We can’t always do what we want, but sometimes a thing could be right but we’re too caught up in the past to realise it, and by then it’s too late. But you can’t let that happen. Things could end badly, but it’s a risk you need to be willing to take. Because life without love is just one hollow moment. A wasted life. And whatever happens in mine, I know I’ve made the right choices. Learn from the past, hope for the future, but live in the present. We only get one life, live it.

Willow leaves her room and goes down the stairs. Tara finishes talking just as Willow reaches the front door. She opens it to leave and Kennedy is standing there about to knock.

KENNEDY
(smiles)
Hi.
