Jade hadn't realized she'd taken the book out of its case, but she suddenly found herself holding it. When Erlic wrapped his arms around her and held her to him she leaned back, her head cocked slightly to one side as she rested it against his neck and shoulder, unaware of the scratchy feeing her regrowing hair might have on his skin.

Erlic bent his head slightly and whispered in her ear, “Life is a difficult journey. We are journeying on its river, and we don’t know what will be around each bend for us. Others have charted it, others have made poetry, history, commerce, and war on its waters and shores, but what will each of us do? That is not yet known.”

She nodded slightly. "True enough, darling... but sometimes we can affect the outcome of our journey. We can choose to paddle faster or more slowly... sometimes we can choose where to stop and go ashore... while we can't revisit where we were before, we can sometimes return to the same spot to explore areas left uncharted on our previous journey."

She chuckled, thinking she must sound like a sappy lunatic to him. She knew she was quite enamored of him and didn't really want to leave. Yet if she didn't deliver her book now she could possibly become incapacitated and not able to deliver it, which would be irresponsible and would not go very far to ensuring confidence in future business associates. She had worked hard to make herself a reputation for being dependable and that was why she could demand and get higher fees for her services. It would be foolish of her to throw that away now, though she was sorely tempted.

“So when do you leave,” Erlic asked, a bit hesitantly she thought. “More important,” he said, as if an afterthought. “Will you ever be returning?”

She smiled, turning to face him, one hand lifting to trace her fingertips across his cheek, her eyes gazing into his with a deep sentiment and some sorrow.

"I should leave as soon as possible. I have a portal stone which will transport me to my client's home." She looked down at the book and ran a hand over its cover. "As for returning..." she smiled softly, looking back into his eyes. "If you wish it, darling, I will return as quickly as I can. My client is a mage of some considerable power. Perhaps, with some convincing, I can persuade him to make me a return portal."

She placed her hand on his cheek, the feel of his whiskers exquisite in her palm, and pressed her lips to his. She kissed him softly with an almost painful longing, deepening it to something more before breaking the kiss. She looked into his eyes, smiling warmly. "It might cost a bit, but I believe it would be well worth it."

She hoped he really desired her return. It would be presumptious and foolish of her to force her presence on him, especially since she was well aware that he had many difficulties ahead of him.

She continued to gaze into his eyes, unable to tear herself away for the moment.
