Subject: Parting is such sweet sorrow...

“I understand,” Erlic said quietly, “that you have work to finish, and that such work requires time. It is by your own endeavors that you have proven yourself to your clients, and proven it well, otherwise you wouldn’t be here in search of a book. It is quite obvious that you take your work seriously, as do I, but I cannot tell you what to do, just as I’m sure you couldn’t tell me what to do.”

He stopped for a moment, his eyes searching her face as if memorizing it, and she smiled, for she was doing the same thing. As always when she looked at him, her heart leapt in a way that she had never before known, and she somehow felt that she never would again unless she returned.

Finally he spoke again. “However, I would be lying to you if I told you I didn’t want you back. I cannot force you to return. I can only hope that there is some aspiration between us that would warrant your return possibly with the endeavor to mutually seek out the other, and learn more about his, and her ways.”

Jade smiled. She understood perfectly that he could not... would not come out and ask her to return, for he didn't want to make her feel obligated to him. But she also understood that he was telling her that, should she wish to return he was more than happy to have her back.

As he stroked her face, she leaned into his touch, closing her eyes momentarily before opening them again as he continued.

“I hope you do decide to return, whether your absence be short, or long. I will gladly hold a position open for you, and will continue to do so unless I hear from you otherwise.” He then did something quite unexpected: he handed her his share of the gems they had collected. She looked at them and smiled. "Darling... I don't really need these, but I am touched by your generosity. I'll put them to good use." By which she meant, and hoped he understood, that they would go to facilitate her return.

She set the book aside and wrapped her arms around him, tilting her face to his and kissing him deeply -- a kiss full of desire and promise. Her hands searched his face, his shoulders, his arms, fingertips slipping along his body as if by touching him she could keep the memory of his touch with her.

Finally she stepped back and picked up the book, stuffing it into her pack. "Until I return, darling..." she slid her fingers along his jaw once more, letting his whiskers tickle the tips. She turned and walked a few feet away then pulled a small green stone from her pouch and held it out, pointing at the wall. She recited the words that unlocked the spell in the stone and a shimmering blue portal opened in the wall.

She hesitated, then turned back to Erlic. "To remember me until I return..." she said, and handed him her black dagger. "It administers an electrical shock when it strikes an enemy. Quite a useful weapon, really." Finally she could delay no longer, though it was so hard to leave... so hard to leave him.

She smiled, blew him a kiss, and stepped into the portal. It closed behind her soundlessly leaving only the memory of her presence behind.
