Laurel sat down on the cold, stone floor when they reached the hot spring, a smile coming to her face as she watched their friends playing and relaxing in the water. Her eyes widened slightly when she saw a topless Jade being…well… fondled by an unusually sensitive Erlic. She snorted and shook her head, still smiling. There was just no other way to put it. What was the girl doing running around topless, anyway? Laurel had always been under the impression that humans were somewhat modest creatures.

She shrugged and began pulling off her deerskin boots before shrugging out of her cloak and laying aside her bow and the lute case strung across her shoulder. She had already pulled her shirt over her head and was in the process of stepping out of her breeches when she noticed Argus, just standing there, staring at her as if she’d suddenly sprouted wings or grown pink and purple spots all over her body.

She realized he was blushing. “Oh, sweet lady,” she said, laughing and trying not to roll her eyes as she gently kicked her pants away with one bare foot. “I’m not naked, you silly goose. Now either get undressed like a normal person or jump in fully clothed, if it suits you. But don’t stand there staring all day.” Her smile grew quirky and she gave him a teasing wink. “It’s rude, you know.”

Gods preserve the man if he caught sight of Jade, she thought wryly. Thinking that he was following her advice, she stepped slowly into the pool, tugging her hair out of its braid so that she could let the warm waters rinse through each strand. She submerged herself underwater for a few seconds, her muscles relaxing happily as they were soothed by the underground heat.

When she broke the surface again, she laughed lightly to see Tia chasing Corum around the edge of the pool. Jade and Erlic were gone, much to her relief—why she should be relieved to see them missing was beyond her, so she chose not to dwell on the thought—as were Ravin and Isobel. She treaded water for a moment before her eyes shifted back on shore.

Argus was still standing there. Perhaps she’d been too hasty in giving him a mental clean bill of health. Had her understood her or not? “The…water…is…good,” she said slowly, annunciating each word carefully. “See?” she flicked a few warm droplets toward him, smiling reassuringly. “Good water. Why don’t you come in?”
