Rowan agreed wholeheartedly with Marz’s take on lovemaking. It was a beautiful, pleasant experience that he relished with whomever he was with. Male or female, noble or laborer—it didn’t matter. In his mind, spending a few intimate minutes with another person tore down all social barriers between two (or more) people. Before and afterward, all of life’s ugly shit could sneak up on you again, but for just a few moments, there was only that wondrous, sensual sharing of needs together.

He was slightly relieved when Marz assured him he never looked twice at his sister. Maybe now that all her money was gone, men didn’t view her as such a hot commodity anymore. That Erlic had dropped her like a stone (at least that was how he viewed it, of course.) No one else seemed to want her after that. Really, this lifestyle wasn’t her thing, anyway. She ought to be back in a rich manor house somewhere, ordering servants around, or else snug away in her little cottage in the woods, with only the occasional visitor.

The real reason he got slightly annoyed was because Marz mentioned Tia. Of course, everyone in their group felt a slight attraction to the little pixie-like thief, on account of her nymph magic. But Rowan liked her for her, he really did. At least he was pretty sure that was why he liked her. Besides, it was fate that had brought them together, right? What were the chances of her choosing him as her fake lover while trying to escape the owner of that ruby necklace she’d stolen? They were meant to be, just had to be.

So it wasn’t cool for him to hear other guys talking about her like that. That was a double standard, he knew, because he still freely lusted after other people without even thinking about it. But…but for some reason it just sickened him, imagining her and Marz or any other guy together in bed. But why? he asked himself, frowning slightly. Why, Silvertree? You’ll get together at some point, so why deny her a little bit of fun on the side, too? You don’t seem to mind taking your share of pleasures, that’s for sure!

He didn’t have an answer to that, so he just shrugged it aside. He raised an eyebrow when Marz referred to Saras as a girl, since he could’ve sworn the genie was a boy. Hmm. Well, he had to admit, he (or she) sure was a little knockout. What made him think Saras was just a pretty, painted up boy? No breasts, he thought, almost snickering. Might as well be a boy, then.

Okay, that was just sad. Shame on him. He was twenty-five years old, already.

When Marz mentioned Jeremy, Rowan looked up with a little, involuntary jerk. Suddenly, he felt warm shame creeping up his face, washing his cheeks with a faint, pink glow he hoped the kid wouldn’t notice. No luck. Marz immediately burst out laughing, after asking him if he and the poor kid had made it together. Naturally, he didn’t need an answer, as Rowan’s shamefaced expression said it all.

He swore under his breath, his eyes focused intently on the far wall while Marz peppered him with smart aleck questions and comments. “Yeah, he was a virgin,” he finally said, rolling his eyes. “And he damn well better remember it for a long time or I’ll be downright insulted!” A small grin started to tug at his mouth, and he sighed good-naturedly.

“The kid was clean until tonight, actually, or so he claims. I found him pouting yet again, because your dragon had hurt his feelings for some reason or other. He was under the impression that he was in love with you, you know.” He rolled his eyes. “I offered to show him that it was okay to want someone you didn’t really love, and he didn’t say no.” He laughed. “I’m pretty sure he had a good time.”

Sighing again, he finally stood up, stretching a bit in hopes of releasing some of the tension that had been building up in his body. “I’d be perfectly willing to show you a few new moves, too, if you’d like. If you ever get tired of that pretty dragon of yours, that is.” He moved toward the cave exit, hopping over a few large stones before grinning back over shoulder. “Just remember: my door’s always open, kiddo.”

Whistling tunelessly to himself, he returned to the pond, scooping up his shirt, boots, and weapons before heading off to find an abandoned wooden house to close his eyes for a couple hours.
