In reply to: Ravin 's message, "Explaining things to the genie" on 13:46:49 02/21/02 Thu

“There are bad tempered genies that like to hurt humans… I think they do it because they’re unhappy…” Saras said quietly. He had only heard through the sleepy way that all genies knew everything about each other, that sometimes genies would disappear. They never lasted long, once they went bad it seemed. None of them really knew for sure what happened, but it seemed likely that they were just eliminated by the gods that had made them. Saras remembered, when he accidentally waken them, that it had been a popular option for him. Because he had broken the rules, they had simply wanted to purge him from the collected group. But they hadn’t… in the end, because all he had wanted to do was make people happy, they had just taken his magic away to do so. Or something. Saras wasn’t really sure about what his punishment was… Sometimes it seemed like he still had some of that magic left... But then he didn’t. It was confusing, really. Because although he knew what he had done wrong… and he knew why he was being punished, he just didn’t know why it was only in effect some of the time.

To Saras, it sounded much like the people Ravin talked about, the horrible people, were like the unhappy genies who twisted the wishes, and used them to make humans unhappy, instead of happy, as they had originally intended. He wondered why genies, and humans for that matter went bad. Why they could enjoy hurting others. He had always thought it was because the other genies had become so unhappy, but he didn’t know why making people happy was something bad. Or why it would make someone so unhappy… but Saras had never lived as human for more then a year, and although he had learnt lots, he was not a human, and did not really understand how they worked, even if he tried. He was also incredibly naive and optimistic… he had a sort of innocence about him that put others before his own needs.

Still, as he listened to Ravin, he felt himself saddened by the news that people they knew or who cared about them were unhappy and hurting. He had known that he couldn’t make things better. This was something even his wishes couldn’t fix. Time perhaps, but not him. But he could still be there... to do what he could to comfort Ravin, who because of the nature of their relationship, he hated to see unhappy. He hated unhappiness in most everyone, but he felt it especially strong because of the bond he felt with Ravin. He would have cried and hugged Ravin close, but that would be wrong. Ravin didn't need to be the one offering a shoulder. Ravin was the one who needed someone, and since no one else better suited was here, Saras hoped he could at least help make the pain a bit more bearable.

Saras knew what it was to be alone when one wanted company. Even if Ravin didn’t want him as a genie, friends were supposed to be there for others, weren’t they? He was determined that Ravin wouldn’t feel so alone, if he could help it. He knew he had so far been a pain, but he was trying... maybe this time he would do good and not make the situation worse.

“My people sleep when they’re not awake to grant wishes…” he said. “We don’t live like humans…” he added, adjusting his head on Ravin’s shoulder so he could look at the man’s face. “We sleep, wake up with a new master, and then go back to sleep when our jobs are done….that’s all.” he said.
