In reply to: Laurel 's message, "They ought to know" on 13:26:29 02/05/02 Tue

“Well? We must tell the others.”

Laurel’s voice took on the tone of affirmative action that only reflected her upbringing. She was a good friend, but it was obvious she hadn’t taken a look around her or she wouldn’t have made the snap decision.

“This man, if he has Eremis, he will soon know all about us. Our location, our task, our friends, everything. He will know about you, which I suspect is of some importance to him. I confess I do not know why he should wish to beat your friend Dalo and then capture Eremis, but I am willing to bet that it means you—and thus all of us—are now in great danger. Otherwise, Dalo would not have contacted you.”

Erlic gazed at the woman, and fully realized the implications of the beast master’s message. It had taken him years to put together a working idea that eventually grew into the specialist’s guild. He hadn’t simply gone out, and asked if anyone wanted to join. No, he had taken his time, and learned to establish, as well as recognize, the talents the people had, and how it could best suit not just him, but everyone together, as a group, a closely knit group related to one another, as well as their work.

Not only had it taken an exorbitant amount of time, but also Erlic had also to establish some form of headquarters for his group. Just a house in the middle of the city would draw too much suspicion from other passersby, and that simply would do. He needed someplace that was secluded, where everyone could be free to come, and go as they pleased, without the need of worry.

It was by sheer accident that he had stumbled upon the current headquarters of the specialist’s guild. He had actually been practicing his climbing techniques on the bare solid rock when he noticed a slight indentation within the rock’s walls. Considering he was alone he decided to search out only part of the place in case there were various unfriendliness within its confines.

Luckily for him, he didn’t have to worry about too much with the exception of a few ogres. He had managed to incapacitate them before exploring its deep caverns. When he had finished he was quite impressed, and that was when the seed started to grow in fruition. The place was perfect for his so called group.

Of course it would require a great deal of money for such an organization to start, as well as grow. Fortunately his profession enabled him to make a considerable amount of money, and because he wasn’t a big spender, with the exception of weapons, and such, he was able to slowly hire the best craftsmen in the world to do his work, namely the dwarves. When he had explained his idea to them, they took pride considering they would be working within a mountainous region, something they enjoyed, and, they would be away from prying human eyes, with the exception to Erlic, who simply brought the dwarves their ale, and left them to do their work.

That seemed so long ago, and now that the guild had prospered, Erlic was happy with his achievement. Unfortunately, everything couldn’t be perfect all the time. There was still the matter with Tegol, and how he would go about planning the man’s demise.

He turned to the druid, who seemed intent on telling everyone herself of what had just happened. Erlic simply looked at the woman in wonderment. “Have you taken a good look at the people that travel with us?” Erlic asked.

Seeing the look of uncertainty upon Laurel’s face, Erlic proceeded to explain. “All of us have endured severe hardships since the time we left the tribal camp,” he began. “We have all been injured in some form, not only with the battle back at the tribal camp, but here as well. Isobel has a gash in her leg. Marz is currently unconscious, after….” He paused in his explanation realizing that no one had questioned what, or how Marz had suffered the injury. To say too much at this time would not be prudent.

“After his injury,” the guild master continued. “Ravin is battling his own inner enemies at the moment. For now it would be best for all to simply rest, and enjoy themselves since the time allows it. Once everyone has rested, then, and only then, will I call a meeting to explain to all that travel with us what has transpired.”

The guild master was back to his old self. The mind was already in a planning stage, and probably would be for some time. Although he couldn’t do anything from his current vantage point, he knew he could rely on Dalo for the necessary information. He also appreciated Dalo’s understanding of be safe. Dalo was a good man, one that he didn’t want to lose regardless of any cost. Everyone associated with the guild was considered special in his eyes.

For now, he had to concentrate on keeping everyone alive during their current threat of assassins here in Neromba. Once they had procured Queen Kazabet’s articles, then he would start the planning stages with Ravin, as to how to handle what might happen once they returned to the city of undead.

“Not to worry,” Erlic stated. “Everything in due time will be revealed to all those considered. For now, let them enjoy their happiness. I don’t feel the need to disturb their merriment, especially after everything they have endured.”

Erlic wondered just when his life would turn to one of merriment. Perhaps Chirp, Dalo’s parrot that had resided in the guild, and now in the tavern, was right. The parrot had the ability to repeat what it heard the most, and one of its more famous sayings was Erlic’s a grumpy old bastard. He realized that the bird had gotten that from Dalo, Scrounge, Jarson, as well as some of the other guild members. But it was always in good jest. But perhaps they knew the truth, that he was simply that, a man of business with no capabilities of having fun like the rest of them.

Erlic didn’t let such thoughts bother him. He was what he was, and there was nothing he could do about it, at least for the moment. His fate led him through many obstacles, and many crossroads, and it was only his sound reasoning that allowed him to choose the correct one. Hopefully, as time went on, he would learn more about the ways of human life, and possibly learn to enjoy what he never had the time to learn.

“In due time Laurel,” he whispered. “In due time.” He drank from his wine skin once again as thoughts drifted in and out of his mind.
