Author: Isobel and Barry
Subject: I'd walk a mile for a camel
In reply to: Rowan and Laurel 's message, "Stop---camel time!" on 14:04:24 01/18/02 Fri

Isobel nodded as Ravin asked her to help him choose a camel. "The humps are most uncomfortable if the saddle is not positioned just right," she commented, remembering the sore bottom she had sported after her first camel ride with the caravan and the hours of sitting perched atop the highest part of that hump.

Laurel appeared carrying a cat and a slate and chalk. Laurel set the cat down and it darted to Isobel, rubbing on her legs. She reached down and scratched the cat's neck and back as she listened to Laurel and Ravin.

Laurel handed the slate to Ravin. "I got it from one of the Jann," she said. "Now you can practice your letters properly, just like the school children." Isobel looked over at Ravin. So... Señor Ravin could not write... or presumably read? That explained his doodling in the dirt. Well, everyone had to learn sometime. Laurel was still speaking: "Pretty soon we can move on to spelling whole words, and you shall be able to write beautiful, heartfelt love letters to Isobel here, if you are so inclined."

Isobel nearly choked on the sip of java she had just taken, her sudden movement causing the cat to leap back from her before deciding she was not having some sort of seizure after all and wrapping itself back around her legs. She caught Laurel's wink then and snorted softly, grinning. "I think perhaps seven pages would be adequate size for love letters to me, no?" She chuckled. "With footnotes."

Seeing everyone else heading off to choose their camels, she finished her coffee and stood, brushing herself off and slinging her pack over her shoulder. "Señor Ravin, perhaps you should ride with someone in case your injuries cause you to slip from your camel..." She glanced at Laurel. "Perhaps Laurel would ride with you ... then you could continue your lessons on the journey. I would not want those love letters to be too long in coming." She winked at Laurel and grinned as she made her way to the camels, looking for ones that did not drool or spit quite so much. She nearly tripped over the cat, who was persistently trying to rub her legs even as she walked. "Un gato loco," she said to it affectionately.

She found a sweet tawny colored camel with a double saddle and turned, calling out to Ravin that this one seemed to have a good temper. She patted the camel on its nose, speaking softly to it. It blinked at her and chewed its cud. Nice and docile. Good for an injured person (and perhaps one trying to write his letters on a slate) to ride.

She found the one next to it to be a little more feisty, but at least it did not spit at her as she rubbed its nose softly, though it did drool on the cat, who meowed in protest and began to wash itself indignantly.

She looked around for Erlic. She was hoping that since she did not have to occupy herself with guarding Alakbar thanks to the imbicile Justin that she would be able to find out from Frio something about how to sleep and remain awake at the same time. She could think of many uses for that particular skill.

When she realized that he would probably be riding up front to keep watch, she sighed. Her questions would have to wait for another time.

Barry goggled at the thong Saras was holding. "Jeremy wears it, but I confess, I’m a little bit Confused as to where and how he wears it…" Saras said, eyeing it. "Although the leather is beautiful, I think it would look much nicer if it had been tooled or there were beads along the straps here, or some sequins like the ones on the blouses of the Jann women…”

"Ehhhh ... whatever floats your boat," Barry said. It seemed to him that the thong was probably some sort of weapon... like a sling. But Saras had said that Jeremy wore it. "Why don't we ask him how it's worn?" He said, then snatching the thong in his teeth he floated over to Jeremy, the underwear dangling from his jaw. "Hey, kid! So how do you wear this thong thing?" Barry dropped the thong on Jeremy's head. "Makes a nice hat," he commented. Jeremy angrily snatched the thong off his head and stalked off after Rowan as the group began to get the camels ready. "Hey, inquiring minds wanna know!" He shouted at Jeremy's receding back.

Barry cackled loudly then floated over to Corum. "C'mon, Chief. You don't want to have to ride the nastiest camel in the desert. Shake your bones or you'll end up with the last one standing."
