Marz ignored the dirty looks Justin shot at him as he rode along on the camel with Tristan leaning back against him, sound asleep. He'd deal with the ugly merc later. Right now he was more concerned with keeping Tristan from falling off their mount. He wrapped his arms around him, holding him close until the sounds of hooves pulled him from his slumber.

Immediately, Marz released his hold, his hand flying to the hilt of his sword. When the strange half-horse, half-human beasts appeared and ordered them to dismount with their hands in the air, Marz was the most reluctant to do so. It just wasn't in his nature to give into such demands without a fight.

Upon seeing Erlic and the others follow the creature's orders, Marz sighed then did the same. Maybe it was better to play along right now and wait for a more opportune time to kill these horse-things. While rolling his eyes, he tugged at his hair as instructed, wondering at the odd command. Did the weird looking horse-humans have some kind of a hair fetish?

Once the turban headed female with the bow apologized for being rude, Marz relaxed a little. When he overheard Ardesmar whisper that centaurs were honorable people, he raised a brow. Centaurs? Was that what these creatures were called? It soon became apparent that his companions weren't very surprised by the sight of the human horses. Since Marz didn't want to look like a dummy by admitting that he never heard of a centaur before, he remained silent during the entire mile long walk to the lush oasis.

Will we ever get to that Sea of Salt? he wondered, when Ebessa advised them not to approach the area until nightfall. Listening to the centaur's advice meant that they'd be stuck at the oasis for at least the next fourteen hours! Marz scowled, thinking how bored he'd get lounging around all damn day with nothing to do. Only after meeting Erlic's eyes did he smile. Maybe he could get his sensai to start training him how to fight with a sword in both hands. Of course he could practice meditating as well, but shivered at the thought of working with the first chakra again. Hopefully, Erlic AND Tristan would forget about that chakra nonsense!

Marz followed the others to one of the campfires, making a face at the bowl of fried snakes that was set out before them. He nodded in agreement when Tristan adamantly stated that he refused to eat such a disgusting meal. "I'll be right back," he said, before running to the camel they had shared that was now grazing by the water. He untied the sack of magically preserved food that Kazabet had packed for them from the saddle and returned to the campfire with it in hand.

When Marz saw Corum sitting beside Tia, he grinned. He was happy to see his friend finally making a move on the pretty blonde. Barry's arrival made him scowl because the skull still hadn't lived up to his promise of dumping some bugs on Justin's head! Marz moved to sit near Corum then passed out the real food after Tristan plopped down beside him.

"Maybe we can go for a swim later on," he whispered to the dragon. The nearby pond that was surrounded by trees and other vegetation would be a welcome relief from the hot sun that would be beating down on them by mid-morning.

The ex-gang leader took a bite out of the slice of ham he held, his eyes shifting to Ravin when the thief called out a wish to the genie. Everyone jumped when the campfire rose higher and a stream of flame shot out from Saras, slamming into Ravin. The thief let out a yell as he was thrown onto his back, and the genie doubled over with a cry of pain.

A number of centaurs moved closer to their human guests, driven by curiosity. The Jann in the group watched the strange occurrence with interest, well aware of the power wielded by the genies of Neromba. They would have laughed had they known of Saras' inability to grant wishes properly.

Jeremy dropped the snake meat he held, quickly placing his hands on the genie's shoulders. "Are you all right?" he asked, his young eyes filled with worry. He let out a sigh of relief when Saras gave him a nod. "What the heck just happened?"

Ravin blinked at Isobel, who stared down at him with concern written all over her face. He shook his head to clear it then sat up, feeling a little disorientated. When he finally remembered his wish, he reached out for the slate and chalk that had fallen from his hands. My dearest Kyri, he wrote. The letters formed perfectly, and the words were spelled correctly.

"Sweet god of stealth!" Ravin cried. "I can read and write now!" Excitement lit up his eyes and a wide smile spread across his mouth. "My thanks Saras," he called out to the genie before glancing at the faces of his other companions. "Does anyone have parchment, ink, and a quill? I need to write a letter!"
